Memorial Day Memories

Preparations
for Memorial Day
begin in late March.

Crepe paper
and thin wires were
purchased.

Then
for the next few weeks
every spare moment
was spent
making flowers.

On Memorial Day
the car was loaded
with boxes containing
crepe paper roses
and a picnic lunch.

We
would go
to cemeteries:
in Blackwell,
Medford,
and sometimes
into Kansas
looking for Newland's
and Chaplin's.

I wrote this in 151 B.E. It was written around memorial day, and the memories are from my childhood. My grandparents always took a Memorial Day trip to put flowers on the graves of relatives who served in the armed forces.
