Some rainbows are bright, some gray, some in colors you've never seen.
** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only **

The sun is always shining and there are always rainbows. If it's cloudy, the rainbow may be covered or in shades of gray. If the rain has just passed, the rainbow may be strong, clear, and brilliant. If the sky is crystal clear, the rainbow may appear in colors unexpected.

Whatever is going on for you, there's a rainbow out there somewhere. Look for it. And if you find it, let it brighten your day. Keep it in your heart to tide you over until you see the next one.

Gonna give this Johari Window thing a shot. If you think you know me or want to see what others think about me, follow the link then follow the directions.

Life is words in motion:
Flowing from mind, to hand, to page;
Sung from heart, to voice, to ear;
Life is words in motion.

~Douglas

The Human Touch
By Spencer Michael Free

‘Tis the human touch in this world that counts,
The touch of your hand and mine,
Which means far more to the fainting heart,
Than shelter and bread and wine;
For shelter is gone when the night is o’er,
And bread lasts only a day,
But the touch of the hand and the sound of the voice
Sing on in the soul always.

Spike TV is showing the first two movies of the Star Wars series tonight (Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones). There's actually a couple of questions I have... especially stemming from the second of the movies. When Ben Kenobi is captured and Count Dooku confronts him, he says that the Senate is now in control of a Sith Lord. Even a casual observer of the series to that point should be able to tell that he is telling the truth. What would have happened, do you suppose, if Ben had believed him? What kind of 'alternate future' would have happened?

Dooku is obviously in league with the Sith Lord, aka Chancellor Palpatine. He makes that quite clear in his fight with Yoda. So other than obviously intending to make the Jedi more staunchly opposed to him, what did Dooku plan to get by telling him the truth? Why expose the general plan like that? He must have known - or at least expected that - Ben would disbelieve him.

And if he would so easily tell Ben the truth like that, why wouldn't he also tell Yoda in their battle. Is it because Yoda would have been able to discern that as the truth? Wouldn't that have just caused him to be confused? Something which would work to Dooku's advantage?

Something else that bothers me about Dooku, he seems to still hold to many of the ideals of the Jedi even while fighting them. He seems to hold to a measure of honor that any other Sith we have seen does not. If you watch him after he defeats Anakin, and just before Yoda arrives, a pained expression crosses his face. Enough doubt is left in the mind of the viewer to wonder if it is just exhaustion or if he is feeling a measure of remorse for having to betray his old colleagues, the Jedi.

The one thing that I really enjoy about all the various conversations between Dooku and Ben, and Dooku and Yoda it the line of Master/Padawan which is revealed: Yoda/Dooku, Dooku/QuiGon, QuiGon/Ben, Ben/Anakin. Then of course ultimately there's Yoda and Ben/Luke.

Now for the key point to this: There's a lot of lessons we hopeful authors can take from this movie and it's creator, George Lucas. The principle one being how a good author can leave questions in the reader's (or watcher's) mind even as the story is revealed to happen in a specific manner. May my writing fe as ingenius as his.

Now, who wants to take on the challenge of writing the alternate ending/history if Ben had believed Dooku? Personally, I think it's beyond my current ability to do so. It would be interesting to see what would happen though.

Why does it seem like the boss is always the person who is most likely to fly off the handle when the slightest thing goes wrong?

Considering how early Christmas decorations and such whatnot was out in the retail sector this year, it probably isn't. But I've already selected my nic for the holiday season for WDC.

If you would like to be put on the mailing list for the first edition of the ezine "BayoUniverse" (in which I have a story and of which I am a co-editor) please email me at doug.hill@bcpahouston.org with your email address. The ezine is free and to be published quarterly. Neither I nor my organization will sell your information for any purpose.

Just thought you might be interested in my first publication.

If you want to read it, but don't want to give an email address, I'll see if I can post a link for an archival file once one is set up at some point in the future.

Has anyone else had trouble accessing the NaNo site? Since they updated the place for this year's challenge, I haven't been able to load the page. It's so frustrating! Did they make serious upgrades? I'm kind of hoping it's only my modem. The only message that comes up on my computer when I try to connect is "Connecting to nanowrimo.org", then the page times out.

Maybe I'll try my computer at work tomorrow.

Anyhow, my first entry for NaNo sets me at 1045 words: "Invalid Entry. I'm not even worrying about a title for this thing yet. I'm just letting it flow and have the story tell me what's going on. We'll see how this goes.

Gonna take a break from it for a bit. Then I'll get back and try the next "chapter" later today. Hoping to finish the day at around a 3K word count - and being able to post it on my NaNo page/book or whatever they call it.

Actually, it was more like an overheard phone conversation taking place on the other side of the room. Sometimes that's a good thing in a small office like the one I work in. There's only a handful of paid staff in our organization, Bayou City Performing Arts https://www.bcpahouston.org. And of that handful, only three regularly work in the office - two of whom are full-time, me and the General Manager.

Anyway, what I'm getting at is this: Our organization is starting up a new e-zine for our organization and subscribers and patrons, BayoUniverse. And I have been tapped to be a founding creator/editor/contributor.

The first issue due in early November, is going to be a bit short and perhaps rushed, but I'm hoping for the best with it. In fact, I was up at 3:45 AM this morning and working on ideas for articles and features and the first official meeting of the editors isn't until next Tuesday.

Needless to say, while I'm somewhat perturbed at having awakened so early (and I am thoroughly awake now *Pthb*), I'm also rather psyched at this opportunity and looking forward to what this could potentially do for my writing resume.

Umm... this would be considered to be publishing credentials, right?

Saturday afternoon, after Ike had passed, I made a walk around the neighborhood to see what I could see. This was, after all, the first hurricane I've ever actually experienced. In no particular order, here are some things I observed during my perambulation:

- At Bering Memorial United Methodist Church, one of the oldest churches in the area, the structure came through fairly sound (from an exterior viewpoint). But they completely lost one tree in the front courtyard which fell towards the street and away from any building, while a second tree on the back of the campus split and the top fell onto the roof of the portion of the building housing the dental center which takes care of people with HIV/AIDS.

- In front of a newly built townhouse, there were a couple of very tall, slender pines. One of them was bent over and tucked under a small balcony. It looked like the storm had frightened it and it tried to hide there to protect itself.

- Every block I walked by had at least one tree down or severely damaged.

- Being an older neighborhood, there are a lot of trees along every street. But there was so much debris of twigs and leaves blown about that I felt like I was walking in the forest back in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains in Upstate New York again.

- One house had four cedars(?). The key word being "had". All of them were either split or knocked over. One of them even knocked a garage off its concrete slab foundation and caused damage to a neighboring house.

- A few of the streets around here are residential boulevards in the old sense with a greensward running down the middle. One tree knocked over on a greensward (which was about two lanes wide) was so large that its branches stretched over not only the greensward, but also completely blocked all lanes in both directions on either side of it.

- The first business I saw which was open was a bar. The second business I saw open was a bar. The third business I saw which was open was a drug store. I guess the first two were for emotional recovery from the storm, while the third was to recover from the hangover which was bound to come along.

- And speaking of those bars, they were gay bars. One of them, long known for it's window paintings which changes at least monthly, had inscribed the following: "Like Tina Turner, Ike won't keep us down."

- Granted, I live in the oldest gay neighborhood in Houston, but aside from Pride weekend, I don't think I've ever seen as many gay and lesbian couples out and about holding hands in full public view. It was almost enough to make me want to have more major storms come through. To see gay and straight couples out and about with no sense of fear, hatred or disgust but united in care and concern for their homes, neighborhood, and that everyone was alright was a bit of the utopia many GLBT have been fighting for. And here it was happening naturally.

- The street I live on is three lanes wide with the center lane a "reverse traffic" lane. So during morning rush hour traffic two lanes are inbound and one outbound, while evening traffic is two lanes out bound and one inbound, and the late morning, afternoon and overnight hours it is one lane each direction with the center lane a turning only lane. All of this starts right in front of my apartment complex. There is a large arm which stretches across the road announcing the beginning/ending of the reverse lane. That arm is now turned almost ninety degrees and one of the signs flipped to face down so that it tells the street (rather than drivers) that the reverse lane begins at some point overhead into the sky.

- While there were several types of trees that suffered some type of damage, I didn't see one single banana tree/plant which survived the hurricane. Every single one I saw was destroyed.

- On the block where I work, one end of the block had a tree fallen over across the road while the other end a palm tree had fallen over completely blocking access.

- Within hours, I saw two intersections with functioning or semi-functioning traffic lights.

- Despite city and county officials warnings and recommendations for people to not be driving out on the roads, traffic seemed to almost be back to normal Saturday levels on the area main roads.

- Our local Starbucks seemed to weather the storm well, except for one large pane of window glass - the one on which the company logo was affixed.

- Jack-In-The-Box's large overhead sign was completely blown out.

- Wendy's only lost a driveway exit sign.

- McDonald's and Burger King looked to have come through with no problems at all.

Things I heard about:

- A 40-year-old local landmark restaurant, Brennan's, was destroyed, not by the hurricane, but by fire during the height of the storm.

- The Chase Bank building in downtown had about 15 floors of windows on the north side blown out. There was paperwork, computers and all manner of office stuff on the street. Many other buildings had some windows blown out, but none suffered as much as Chase.

- 2.1 out of 2.2 million customers lost power. That converts to about 4.2 out of 4.4 million people. Withing 24 hours, that number was already down to under 2 million customers without power. (Today, over two weeks after Ike passed, 377,000 customers are still without power despite 12,000 workers from across the nation and Canada) out in the field working to restore power.

- Reliant Stadium, lost five of the fabric panels from the roof but otherwise is structurally sound.

There's more notes that I have which I want to add, but I need to get ready for a meeting in about an hour and a half. So I'm calling it a day on this blog entry. I'll get around to the rest of it later.
