Welcome to my cabin, where I house the thoughts and ramblings of a mildly insane Norwegian writer.
Please note that the viewpoints contained within are strictly my own and are not meant to offend anyone in any way. However, I am always open to new input if you wish to discuss any blog post. Simply leave me a comment or send me a mail.
There is more than one kind of person. At one extreme are people who tend to be chameleons or shape shifters and adapt rapidly to new situations, even changing their behavior and speech patterns if necessary.
At the other extreme are people who are quite rigid in their personality and refuse to change either behavior or speech patterns even it the situation warrants it.
Interestingly, this often corresponds roughly with political divisions. The more flexible, shape shifting, tolerant people tending to be liberal or Democratic. And the more rigid, unvarying, intolerant people tending to be conservative or Republican.
Hmmm.. strangely my comment for the one above this seems apt for this one too. Did you ever check with your mother to see if you had a long difficult birth?
I've heard that most (perhaps all) novels, especially in literary ones, there is always a character that represents the author's beliefs and views. You probably have not read Women in Love by DH Lawrence, but the character of Birkin is the one who DH Lawrence identified with.
That said, I do know what you mean. I haven't been able to finish my first novel yet, and I have one that's half written which is half autobiographical. And I feel as if... who really wants to read about me? I must be the only one who thinks my own self is interesting. The doubts and fears of a writer, I guess.
I think about this too, every now and then. I'm suspicious of when others say that you're finally displaying your true self. As if they know your 'true self' better than you would? I think its more likely a poor choice of wording on their part. Do you think when they say that, what they actually mean is that they can finally see a side of you that they like (or don't like, depending on the context they said it in)? And shapeshifting - when we can help it, I do think we behave in a way to reflect how we want others to perceive us.
I will have to disagree on you in one thing, i think there is 'something' underneath. Strip us of all the things that make up our identity - our achievements, occupation, family, nationalities - and I think there is still something underneath that makes every single one of us very different from the next person.
It is sad, that a person who wears the badge of this or that, cannot know the rules of their conviction.
They (in this case; the Christian) has a great story about charity and brotherhood), which is generally known as the 'Good Samaritan'. (available at the nearest Wiki or New Testament, near you.)
And one of the greatest laws - Love thy neighbour ...
