Lucy sounds like she was a joy to be around. I know what you mean about picking an animal from the shelter, so much to consider before adding them to your family. Macavity (our eldest cat) came from a shelter and they didn't disclose his heart condition before we adopted him.
I know I've mentioned about the digital photo frame my girls gave to me. And, I do understand your feelings about time flying while perusing those youthful photos.
My daughters got together and digitalized memorable photos on a digital photo display, and gave it to me on Mother's Day a few years ago. I love it so much, watching them grow up before my eyes on the display.

So sorry about some family members having drug and alcohol problems. It seems there is a growing problem in the past couple decades of families going through that. You are there to listen. And that's what counts.
Memories of when family was altogether are beautiful. These days many families live in different states from their children and don't get to see them as often. Four out of five of my children live in other states. We are still a close family and group text to keep up to date with what's going on. I know, not the same as being together at the dinner table. I do miss that!
