Ten years ago I was writing several blogs on various subjects - F1 motor racing, Music, Classic Cars, Great Romances and, most crushingly, a personal journal that included my thoughts on America, memories of England and Africa, opinion, humour, writing and anything else that occurred. It all became too much (I was attempting to update the journal every day) and I collapsed, exhausted and thoroughly disillusioned in the end.
So this blog is indeed a Toe in the Water, a place to document my thoughts in and on WdC but with a determination not to get sucked into the blog whirlpool ever again. Here's hoping.
Reminds me of a Star Trek Enterprise episode where they encounter a lost colony from Earth. There was an event on the planet that killed off all the adults and the children went underground. By the time the Enterprise found them, the children were old. One woman named Nadet was found to be actually be Bernadette - a sweet little girl in an old photo. Over the years they had forgotten some words and made up others. Maybe it was Townsend's less sophisticated neighbors who just misunderstood his name?
Well, I had a post about ceilings so it seems appropriate to mention floors today. And I'm with the Americans on this one. It makes sense that we should count the ground floor as number one, and that each succeeding floor upwards be numbered accordingly. Why the Brits thought it best to name the first floor the ground floor I'll never know, but it does lead to occasional confusion when speaking of multi-level buildings.
Mind you, if naming a floor, while all the others are numbered, is wrong, perhaps we should count the basement as floor one. Or we could fudge the issue by giving it the number minus one.
