Book of poems written for the second and third years of the Promptly Poetry Challenge.

2023 Quill Nominee

Poems written for Promptly Poetry Years Two and Three. Year three is four poems short of being complete but, having reached 100, I have run out of room in this book for the last few of 2023. This overflow will be consigned to the previous collection of Promptly poems, named Promptly Poetry.

A man stands in a sliver of light, a wall behind him.

The Narrow Way

Caught in the crevasse of life,
the crack ever narrowing,
thin sliver of light illuminating,
between the vaults of darkness.

The past a wall behind us,
return is barred forever,
the sun merely rebounding
off memory’s flat surface.

Forward now the last remaining choice,
onward as the fissure shrinks,
slabs of silence either side,
until slammed shut in closure.

Therapy

The cat,
my companion
through my illness today,
warm, furry presence by my side
all day.

For we are strangers before you and sojourners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no abiding.
1 Chronicles 29:15

Home

We are but sojourners here,
living amongst you
but passing through,
putting our hands to the wheel
yet waiting, always waiting,
learning to live, to feel,
to grow in grace and understanding,
to sweat and toil,
inhabit for a time,
aware for now of mortal coil,
but longing for the call sublime
and faces turned for home.

Sojourners in transit,
eyes fixed on elsewhere.

Transition

To everyone there comes a point
where mere survival’s not enough,
when cost is greater than the prize
and journey meets its terminus,
the strength in grasping hand weakens,
aches to contemplate its rest,
is tempted by the proffered ease
beyond horizon, no longer far,
sees that lightened sky ahead,
while certainly the dying evening,
is also shot with rays of hope
exceeding all that fed this yearning,
and gripping fingers release their charge,
extending welcome to one’s death.
