What women or woman in your life has had the most profound effect on you as a person? Without a doubt, the girl I met in high school and wanted to marry. Debbie Hernandez (We are still very close friends, 56 years later). Debbie was running for class vice -president, and in one class she was asked to tell the class why she should be elected. I don't know how speeches are made today, but back in 1970, a person would speak of how pretty & popular they are and use that angle to win others over. Debbie didn't do that. I don't remember what she said, but the gist of it was that she wanted us to be different! She spoke of things she thought the class could do together, that we shouldn't be content being like everyone else, things like that. She is the reason I decided to not follow the crowd. That's something I've done since that day. I decided that I wouldn't live like so many others, I wouldn't smoke (almost everyone did back then), I wouldn't drink as a teen (almost everyone did back then), and there was no way I'd take drugs of any kind (almost everyone did back then). so yeah, my good friend Debbie really helped shape my life. And you know what? I am so glad we never got married! Friends yes. In love, or lovers. Nope. Jim |
