Kayla walks down the dirt path, it looked like it hadn’t been maintained for years. This path was probably used by woodcutters at some point, but it had clearly fallen by the wayside. It was also getting darker as the sun started to set, Kayla couldn’t see where she was stepping with her toes clearly anymore. All the running she did had made her sweat
a decent bit, her feet were a little damp from doing it in her flats.
Even still, she kept going. It wasn’t like she was going to head back to town, as long as she managed to get through the night. Maybe if she could find a shelter, some trees, or a cave? As Kayla walked, the sweat on her feet picked up dirt and grime from the beat up path, it was getting between her toes and under her toenails.
The lights and sounds of the town faded away behind her, the slap of her bare feet against the ground was the only sound she heard as she went deeper. Kayla took another step, but this time her toes landed into something thick and slimy.

She looked down at the ground, and saw she stepped into a puddle of some gross green ooze. Or maybe not even ooze, it looked like something someone had thrown up. Kayla had no idea what it was, just that she wanted no part in it, when she noticed a red object in it.
Kayla’s curiosity got the better of her, and she grabbed at it with her toes, since they were already covered in the goop. It was hard, and she leaned in to inspect it further. It looked like… a toenail, painted with a vibrant red nail polish.
Kayla looked around, she definitely needed to find somewhere to hide. And even worse, she still hadn’t seen any suitable shelter locations, when she stopped. The darkness made it hard to tell, but Kayla was pretty sure one of the bushes on the side of the path just moved. After a few minutes of nothing, she was about to dismiss it as the wind when it moved again.
“Who’s there?” She called out into the darkness. “Show yourself!” Kayla tried to imbue her voice with some false bravado, though it came out as more of a squeak. The bushes shifted as they opened up and revealed…
