A golden, fluorescent light shimmered from the far end of the branching tunnel. "What the fuck?" Julie said, repeating her earlier sentiment, this time with a greater sense of perplexity.
Debbie's spirit of adventure was apparently emboldened by the new discovery. "Let's check it out," she said, fearlessly climbing down the rocky slope. The timid Debbie that erred on the side of caution was gone.
"Alright then," Julie said, following Debbie down into the bowels of the Earth.
After what Julie estimated to be a one hundred yard descent, the tunnel leveled out some. Ahead, it widened into a chamber, which at its largest was at least seventy feet wide and twenty-five feet tall. The entire chamber was illuminated by that mysterious golden light. Is there some sort of generator buried down here, still providing power after who knows how many years? Julie wondered. She didn’t think so. For reasons she couldn‘t quite pin down, she had a feeling the light was natural, or supernatural, not man made.
Debbie switched off her lantern and looked around in reverence, her lovely face glistening in the golden glow. Julie flipped the switch on her flashlight and stared unabashedly at her friend. She thought Debbie had never been more beautiful than she was now, in this light, that look of unadulterated veneration on her face.
“Look,” Debbie called out suddenly, pointing to a doorway on the western wall of the chamber. Behind the doorway was the source of the light. "Let's see what it is," she said hurrying over to it.
"Wait," Julie called after her. As Julie approached the doorway she began to feel nervous, as if there was something forboding about that light.
