Chapter #6

Something else was different.

As the nurse wheels you down the corridor you try to steel yourself. Samantha -- beautiful Samantha with the bright blue eyes and the cheerful smile and the gorgeous blonde hair -- will be gone. In her place will be who? Someone older? Someone not as pretty? You hope you are prepared.

When you actually get to the room however and see the figure on the bed, you are totally shocked. It's not a girl at all but a guy, no older than you, and very European-looking. At first you think the nurse must have brought you to the wrong room but when the guy sees you he says "Donald!"

For a moment you are confused. "Samantha?"

"Donald, I'm so glad you're all right! Come give me a hug!"

The guy spreads his arms and the nurse wheels you over. You get out of the chair just long enough to accept his embrace. It certainly feels like one of Samantha's hugs. It has her warmth, her customary tightness. But it feels different, too.

"Oh my god," you say as you break. "You -- you're --"

"A guy?" Samantha says. "Yeah, I know. Freaky, isn't it? They did some sort of brain transplant on me. I am now Raoul Carreau. A student of some sort. From Paris. I'm supposed to be taking over his life."

"I know. They told me. It's all very hush-hush."

Samantha nodded. "The only ones who know about this are his family. And you. Not even his girlfriend knows."

"Raoul has a girlfriend?"

"Yeah. Brigitte something. Also a student."

"How is that going to work? I mean after being --?"

"I don't know. There's a lot about this l don't know. But I know one thing. I'm lucky to be alive. And if being a guy is what it means then that's what it means. But look. I don't want to think about any of that right now. It's too much. It's been great seeing you, Donald. It really has. And I'm glad you're all right. But I really need to get some sleep."

The nurse agrees. You give Samantha -- or Raoul -- one last hug and say your goodbyes. As the nurse wheels you out, you are stunned, and feel horribly guilty. This is all your fault. You crashed the car and now your girlfriend has become a guy through some weird Dr. Frankenstein-like process. How could you do that to her? You feel like a terrible person.

When you get back to your room you ask if you can have a sedative. Maybe sleep would do you some good, too. As you drift off, you think about Samantha and all the good times you had. Times that unfortunately will probably never be repeated. Samantha is gone forever. There is only Raoul now. And you wonder what that's going to mean for you. And for him.
