S.C. Stevens set up a block of wood and put the crossbow target on it. Then he took the Handle Extension from Lucas and smashed the target with it. He then inspected the D-Handle. "At least your father knew what he was teaching when he taught you how to maintain your weapons- this end's good and tight." He then looked at the connector section- it was a screw-type. "Threads are clean- do you have the right grease to make sure that the two parts screw together smoothly?"
"Yes sir, I do," Lucas said.
"That's a plus- some new Weekly Guards don't even have the stuff, let alone actually use it." He then picked up the ax-shovel section, and inspected the blades. "Good and sharp," he said. He then picked up the crossbow, and looked at it. "Got another target and bolt?"
Lucas went and got a target and a bolt.
"When I tell you, toss it in the air," Stevens said as he drew the cord back to the holding grove. He took the bolt and put it in the slot. "Alright, toss the target." Lucas tossed the target ten feet into the air. Stevens lifted the crossbow, and pulled the trigger. The bolt pierced the target, and buried itself in Lucas's fence. "Apologies about the fence, but you're right on with the crossbow- good and smooth action, and it isn't going to just release the bolt on you. Hard to get that combination."
"Thanks sir, I use it as often as I can," Lucas smiled. "I got a lion friend who has trouble hunting- messed himself up when he was playing sports- really bad tackle."
"Not the first time a herbivore has had to hunt for someone," said Stevens. "What about the ax-shovel? Do you use that?"
"Not really sir, I tend to use a regular ax for splitting wood and a regular shovel for whatever digging I need."
"That was obvious when you tried the Woodcutters' Chop," Steven's chuckled. "Never use that in a battle against either bandits or the undead- gets you killed either way. I don't want to go to your family and tell them that you got your throat torn out because of a rookie mistake."
"So, what do you recommend?"
"Smack! Slice! Stab! and Smash!," Stevens said with a smile. "Smack them to the ground with the flat of the blades. Slice their arms and legs off with with the edges. Put the two parts together and stab the neck with the shovel point, severing the head from the rest of the body. Finally, smash the skull with the D-handle during Disposal. Simple, fairly quick when properly executed, and always effective."
"Do you think you could teach me how to do that?" Lucas asked.
"First thing when you report for duty tomorrow," said Stevens. "I just like to check on my new recruits before they show up."
"Good to know sir," Lucas said as he picked up the weapons. "By the way sir, will I need to worry about you if you get bit?"
"You want to know if I'm susceptible to turning right?"
"Yes sir," said Lucas. "I mean, I can't be turned if I get bit, but with you humans there is that chance."
"That's right, there is a chance that humans can turn," said Stevens. "Well, my blood was tested and the results showed..."
