You take the appendage into your room and place it on your desk, thinking that maybe the hand can help you with your college paperwork. But first, you make sure the hand can write. Then, you place a pencil between its fingers and hand it a white sheet of paper.

The hand writes in impeccable handwriting: “Son, I know I told you about hurting my hand. It’s very fragile. I know it has impulses, but you need to learn to control them.”

You feel a little embarrassed by your mother’s response. You say, “I’m sorry,” as if the appendage is able to hear. Then, you think for a moment.

The hand is under your mother’s control. She can’t help you with the paperwork, as it would be more useless to communicate with her than to do it yourself.
