“Dude, I don’t know how to say this, but something’s off for me.”
“Well, tell me about it man. ConDavis bros for life right?”
“Yeah, it’s just… this is really weird. Like I don’t even get it.”
“Get what? That you sucked for half a game? That happens to all of us”
“No, it’s not that I sucked it up. It’s something else. I had this weird dream and then when I was playing with you it felt weirdly similar to the dream in some ways. Like I was dreaming about these really random things after having been in the hospital at first. A house, a park, a bedroom. They weren’t places I’ve been and they all felt like really familiar but also… not familiar?”
“Yeah, so that’s just weird dreams man. I don’t think you have anything to worry about. In my dreams I am out being chased by wild monsters and shit. Doesn’t mean anything. I asked my therapist.”
“Well, your dreams have always been fucked up man. This is new for me.”
“Wait I know what this is. Congrats! You finally hit puberty. We were all wondering when that was going to happen.”
“Dude! I didn’t have a wet dream. It was more grounded and seemed realer than any dream I’ve ever had, but it was like I wasn’t me.”
“Yeah, I’m still pretty sure you’re making a big deal out of nothing. You’ll get me next time, you don’t have to go making up these stories for why you lost.”
You realized that you were getting nowhere with Randall so you decided to let it go. He was of the opinion that you were reaching for some excuse for why you lost and you were trying to figure some serious stuff out.
“Hey! Since we have two extra weeks off, why don’t we get together on Friday. It’ll give you two days to ice that sick burn you suffered at my hands in COD”
“Yeah, that sound fine man. You know you can come over whenever.”
“Yeah, but it’s better when you lose when I know you’ve been practicing. So you better get good noob”
“Ha, you’ll be eating those words when I get through with you”
“Unlikely, but I know you’ll try your best now. Talk to you later”
You shut down your Xbox and returned to your bed. “What is going on? I don’t care that I lost but it was more than that. Like I wanted Randall to win? Why would I want that?” You wondered to yourself. Laying on the bed you felt fine physically. Probably better than you’d felt in a long time after getting that extended nap in. Still, you couldn’t shake that you had such a strong reaction to hearing Randall be upset. He wasn’t even that upset really. He was just complaining about the other player’s good plays. There’s nothing unusual about that. It happens every time you play. “So why was this time different?”
The next morning you were up and about earlier than usual. You spotted your mother in the kitchen and decided to say hello.
“You’re up early. Looks like that extra rest did you some good after all”
“Heh, yeah. I guess it did”
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you up before 8 on a summer day. So I’d say it worked a miracle,” your mother said laughing at her own half joke.
“I had really crazy dreams though. I dreamt I was awake during my surgery.”
“Oh, that’s weird. Dreams sure are a funny thing. The doctors told us that a major benefit of the treatment they gave you was that it didn’t require any surgery. Just a few shots were administered and then we waited. The treatment was so simple it sounded like anyone could do it.”
“Yeah, that’s weird. I dreamt there were a whole bunch of doctors and nurses hustling and bustling around my bed. They seemed to be working on something important as I laid there. The room wasn’t like a tv OR either. It looked just like a regular hospital room but maybe bigger.”
“To be honest, sounds more like what it was like for me after giving birth to you kids. The nurses were all busy measuring and weighing the baby. I felt exhausted watching them all fussing after you all from just giving birth but it was strangely a moment of calmness”
“Well, I don’t think that really applies in my case.”
“Of course not honey. Just sharing my own experience with you. Can I make you anything for breakfast?” Your mother asked with a bright smile. She was clearly happy to help you if you wanted but for some reason you weren’t hungry. You patted at your stomach and replied, “No thanks, I’m not really hungry yet Mom.”
“Ok, well if that changes, you just let me know.”
“Will do,” you responded starting to consider your options for the rest of the day. As you sat down at the kitchen table to consider the day’s possibilities you were overcome by a wave of fatigue. “Actually, I might need to head back up to lie down. Got really tired all of a sudden there.”
“Oh? Like what happened yesterday?”
“Yeah, it just hit me really suddenly”
“Well, you know what the doctors said. You need your rest mister. Off to your room you go”
“Yeah, alright Mom. I’ll see you later”
“Yes, you will. I’ll come check on you in a bit”
“Sounds good”
You make your way to your room and collapse back onto your bed. It takes just seconds before you are asleep and dreaming again. A few hours later, your mother come to check on you and finds…
