Talen's quest---double duty--saving the ear...

by: Tiger Cub 🔱 Author IconMail Icon
It took Talen nothing a week to reach the gypsies - dash it, to find the creatures. He rode alone through the west forest, stopping only to feed and water his horse. Going on a quest was more tiresome work than he had expected. The gypsies were a wandering people, they never settled down - something about the Mother of the earth calling to them. They were civilised enough, but they had quick horses and even quicker wits - any whiff of 'visitors' and they set off, scrambling. He'd only ever sighted their camps once during his journey - it didn't help that the earth magic favoured their cause.

It was on the eight morning that he found some favour with the gods. He had headed down to a stream to freshen up when he sighted it - the telltale glimmer.

He'd followed it, reckless cutting through the undergrowth with his blade until he caught up with the light. It finally yielded to him and he touched it, excited but fearing what would happen.

The illusion of the forest shattered around him.

A dozen tents were erected all around, the dazzling silks every colour imaginable. Talen gasped as he took in the sights - and the smells. Sharp incense filled his nostrils, the smell of fresh wine and cinnamon wafting in the forest air. There were only a dozen of the gypsy folk about minding their own business and they paid him no attention.

It was said only those favoured of Mother earth would be allowed to enter the gypsy dwelling. Talen grinned from ear to ear, wiping the sweat of his brow. Apparently, he was favoured.

He so wanted to explore their forest town of exotic markets and silk tents. But he had a job. He had to seek out his acquaintance, or perhaps the gypsy priestess would be of more help regarding the "shinning stone"? Even as he thought about it, Talen felt the week's exhaustion descend on him. Surely he could afford to rest?
