On a grassy hillside overlooking Daven's Port, Dakota sat next to Piper on a soft pillow. They stared into the sky, watching fireworks go off in the distant night, each explosion painting a temporary masterpiece against the dark canvas of the clear night sky. A cool evening breeze whispered through the leaves of the trees around them, carrying the distant sound of laughter and music from the festival below mingled with the chirping of crickets.
It was the 15th of June, which marked the day the city of Daven's Port was founded, which called for a celebration in the form of a miniature New Year's style event.
Dekota's parents weren't far away, having driven up the small road that lead up the hill to witness the fireworks, Piper tagging along. Zack wasn't with them, doing some volunteer work with the festival down in the city. Dekota pitied him. He was missing out on a pretty nice show.
"Some nice fireworks," said Piper, "You enjoying it so far."
Dekota nodded. "Yeah, they are nice."
Piper smirked. "And you wanted to stay at home," she said, nudging Dekota.
"Yeah, I guess crawling out of my shell is worth it after all," she said.
Both girls giggled before growing silent and staring at the fireworks again, but this time they noticed a particularly bright firework...oh wait, it wasn't a firework. It looked more like a fireball!
And it was heading towards them!
Both girls bolted to their feet, their laughter cut short by the sudden realization of the danger hurtling towards them. The fireball grew larger and brighter, illuminating the hillside with a fiery glow. They could hear the roar of the flames growing closer, and Dekota's dad yelling something.
"GET DOWN!" screamed Piper as she pulled Dekota out of the way.
Both hit the ground, hearing the fireball screaming as it went by. They felt the ground shaking as whatever it was crash landed.
Dekota looked up, seeing her mom, father and brother on rising up from the ground.
Dekota's mom, Hannah, was she first to call to them, saying, "You girls okay?''
"Yeah, I think so!" replied Dekota, "And you guys?"
Her dad, Patrick, took a step forward, brushing off the dust from his clothes. "We're okay. But we should check out what just happened."
Luckily they didn't have to go far. The fireball had crashed a several feet away, leaving a deep crater in the pavement. Gingerly looking inside, they saw a strange, glowing stone, it colors seeing to shift under there eyes.
"I think we should call the police," Hannah said, "We need to report this."
They were all pretty shaken. "Maybe leaving the house wasn't such a bad idea," said Dekota, Piper having no idea what to say in returns.
