Chapter #52

The Crossroad of an Empress’s Fate

    by: Yearling Author IconMail Icon
After having to struggle through another day of hard work and determination, you got yourself right underneath your bedsheets and got tucked in for the night. The next day was going to be extra important for you, and you had to get all the rest you possibly could. With thoughts in your head of the day to come, you give a yawn and a stretch before getting dragged off into your sleep.

As you got deeper and deeper into your sleep though, you felt your surroundings begin to become surreal. A sense of lucidity overwhelmed you, as you felt some force trying to make you ebb and flow with it. Something…supernatural, in a way. As you regain your eyesight within the dream, you look around and see a mostly black void, colored only by a gray fog crossing your eyesight.

“…hello?” You think to yourself, trying to speak. “Is anybody here?” You take a step forward, and hear a clear footstep. You could walk, but you weren’t exactly walking on anything of substance. It was as if you had taken a step on the air.

Knowing you could still try to move around, you began to walk forward a bit more, hoping that something was going to happen eventually: someone to speak with, a place to visit, just anything in general. Anything beyond this black void.

As you started to try and gain a view beyond the fog though, a rather young-sounding voice finally spoke out to you.

“Well then, quite curious of you to have ended up here.”

You look around and try to figure out where that voice came from, the sound of the young lady echoing in your head. That’s when you realized, “Wait, are you in my head?”, trying to communicate with this weird presence. The entity responds.

“Don’t worry about what or where I am. Just worry about where and when you are going to be soon.”

When? You could understand the where aspect of her statement, but how would a “when” factor into all of this? You press the matter further for clarification.

“Hey, could you at least explain what’s going on here? I’d kinda like to know where I am right now.”

“You’re at a split in time,” the woman responded. “You’re about to get dragged into a world you won’t know, a world larger than anything you’ve ever known. Literally.”

You begin to process what exactly she’s saying.
A split in time? A strange world that’s literally huge? All of this could be quite the issue.
Another question crosses your mind.

“Can I, at least get a hint about what’s about to happen to me?”

The peculiar being takes a moment to respond, while a few visible trails begin to illuminate on the ground in three different colors;
• Red
• Green
• and Purple.

“Well, think of it like this then; You’re going to meet a woman. Someone whose life is set for any number of possible futures. Most of them are, well…let’s just say not the kind of future that is friendly to the idea of being alive.” The implication of her statement made the situation more tense for you as you continued to listen to the lady speak.

“But, this might be where you come into play. Before you lies just three possible points in time from which you can inject yourself into this woman’s life. What you do from there is completely up to you.”

Looking down each path, you can start to make out the silhouettes of what is presumably the woman in question. Each one seemed very different from the last, even down to how she carried herself as a person.

- Down the red path, she seemed to be most hopeful and determined in her stride.
- Down the green path, she seemingly walked not out of desire, but out of necessity - as if being forced down a road she hated.
- Down the purple path, she instead walked with some level of uncertainty. Not as assured as the red path, but still with more of a proud step than in the green path.

“Be cautious with the path you take,” the voice warned. “There’ll be no going back for you once you choose, and the state the world will be in will change drastically depending on when you start.” You felt someone give you a nudge forward from behind, but when you looked behind yourself, nobody was there.

“Don’t concern yourself with me. Concern yourself only with her.” A loud sigh came out of your mouth as you looked ahead once more, and the three possible paths you could take. You now had a question to answer:

From when would you like to start?
