Ms. Cohen smiled as she tried to not betray her surprise. The night before she had bet that it was no better than a 50/50 chance that Chris would participate in the identity exchange. She started to explain some of what was expected when Debra entered.
“Oh, uhm Hi” she muttered. It was clear to both that she did not expect Chris to be present when she came to talk to the teacher.
“Chris has agreed to help Debra” Ms. Cohen said.
Debra looked at Chris for a second as if to confirm and then added “I’m in too then” she said with a smile.
“Please come back to this room for the free time Study Hall and we can do some planning then”. With that both teens left for their respective classes
Later that day the two and Ms. Cohen met up. Ms. Cohen explained that she had a visitor coming soon to assist with the physical aspect of the swap. She went on to add that she was expecting the two of them to work together to educate each other about home life and personal details that would allow them to switch lives.
“Any questions?” Ms. Cohen said.
“I have one” Debra said. Ms. Cohen nodded for her to continue. “I assume we can complete our school assignments and turn them in as our our original selves but what about tests and quizzes in the other classes when the teachers don’t know we have swapped? No offense Chris but I don’t want to have my grades going way down”.
Chris gave her a sideways glare. He thought that despite what she said, she was in fact offended at having Chris take an exam for her and lower her precious class standing.
“Actually Debra I have considered that and I think it will be fine. Chris is in the top 10% of the class academically. Perhaps with a bit of help from you he can attain your normal test scores.” Ms. Cohen replied smoothly.
“Really?” said Debra skeptically looking at Chris.
“Really” growled Chris. Debra didn’t seem completely satisfied but she dropped her objection.
About then Ms. Cohen got a message to come to the school entrance as she had a visitor leaving the two kids alone.
“I guess wearing my school uniform one time wasn’t enough eh Chris?” said Debra.
Chris studied Debra’s face. He thought the tone of the question had just a hint of mockery. Reminding himself that he was committed to the project he looked at Debra with a level gaze
“It would seem so” he replied neutrally.
Debra continued to poke fun at Chris “I hope you don’t make me look too girly while we are swapped”
“I am hoping you have some shoes with higher heels and some hosiery I can wear” retorted Chris.
Debra was taken aback by how Chris was leaning into her teasing. Ms. Cohen returned with a middle aged woman before she could say any more.
“Chris, Debra this is Ms. Fisher. She has worked in Hollywood in special effects” The kids observed a casually dressed thin woman of average height with short blonde hair enter. She was carrying two brown paper bags.
“Great to meet you two” she said enthusiastically. Turning to Ms. Cohen she said “I see what you mean. Swapping their physical features will be relatively easy”
She returned her gaze at the two teens. “I have brought some items for each of you to help with the project” as she held up the two bags. “Before I meet individually with you I want to mention the computer program to help you develop your new voices. It’s on a thumb drive I will leave with Ms. Cohen and you can put it on your laptops later. It’s very intuitive to use so I wont say anymore.”
Ms. Fisher met with Chris alone first while Debra and Ms. Cohen stepped out into the hall.
“Debra doesn’t wear makeup and styles her hair simply so you shouldn’t need help there. I also don’t think you need to do anything with your eyebrows. To help with with your waist you will wear this cincher” she said holding up a beige garment that had a row of hooks down the front.
“For your chest you will wear these” she pulled out two small flesh colored breast forms. She proceeded to instruct Chris on how to attach them.
Chris tried not to wince as he had been expecting this but his mind began to form an image of his body with female curves.
“This is to help hide your penis” she said handing him something that resembled a jock strap that he always wore while playing soccer for the school team. “It’s called a gaff”
“Lastly, you are going to shave your legs?” Chris noted this seemed more of a command then a question
“Absolutely, I’m going to shave my legs, armspits, and anything that might show” replied Chris.
Putting her hand on Chris’ face she studied it closely “Did you shave this morning”
“Yes but really I can go a day or two without any beard being noticeable”
“Okay, in the bag is a jar of moisturizing cream that can also act as a beard retardant”. I’d recommend rubbing some on your face at least once a day while you are doing this project. Twice a day if you feel some stubble forming at any point.”
Chris confirmed a few things with Ms. Fisher and said he was good to go. Joining Ms. Cohen in the hall they waited while Debra had her own session. Chris did not seem interested in conversation so Ms. Cohen studied his body language.
‘He doesn’t seem to be all that fazed by what this project entails’ she noted with interest.
Ms. Fisher invited the two back into the classroom a few minutes later. Chris noted that Debra seemed a tad nervous as she looked quickly back and forth from Ms. Cohen and himself. The two women went over a few more general points and then the final bell rang. Chris carefully folded the brown paper bag up and placed it into his backpack. He shuddered thinking how he would ever explain its contents to anyone.
The next day Debra had suggested they meet every day during the final study period to work on the project. Taking over a room reserved for school clubs she thought their privacy would be insured to which Chris readily agreed.
As they were setting up Chris opened up the conversation
“I noticed that the voice analyzer requires a list of key words and short phrases to be recorded by each of us as a baseline for the training process. However it doesn’t mean we cant also record longer phrases”
“Okay but how will that help?” asked Debra.
“We can record personal information and that way learn more about each other while also getting skilled at impersonating the other’s voice. For example you could record ‘Hi I’m Debra Burns and my birthday is...”
Debra was somewhat surprised that Chris was thinking so innovatively “That sounds like a good idea. Let’s get started”
The two spent the rest fo the time setting up the voice analyzer database. As the end of the school day approached, Debra had been studying closely Chris a few minutes. She finally acted on an impulse.
“I’m still kind of surprised you want to do this” she said.
Chris was reluctant to discuss his mother’s financial issues so he merely shrugged his shoulders.
“I guess I didn’t think you were that kind of ‘guy’ Chris” she joked while waving her right hand in a swishy fashion.
