James packed up the last supplies he had for Mark, an extra change of clothes, and strapped on the baby carrier placing Mark in the straps to place the child against his chest. The constraining fabric holding the child close to James’s body helped calm the baby temporarily. With this momentary reprieve, James proceeded to grab his lab supplies and moved swiftly out of his room and building to make his way to his lab.
Arriving at his lab at the last possible moment, James settled at his lab station and prepared himself to listen to the instructions for the evening. Mark was calm for the moment, and James continued a gentle sway through the instructions to help ensure there was no disruption. With instructions reviewed, the lab’s population sprung into action. Grabbing supplies, organizing materials and tools, reading instructions through a second and third time. The lab was bustling with activity. The gentle rustle of objects moving, papers being gathered, notes being scribbled and experiments run fortunately did not distract Mark who had drifted back off to sleep.
James’s lab time was approaching its conclusion for the evening and still no word from Nicole, until finally a text message came through.
“James! I’m so sorry. I owe you big!!! I know I messed up and I will make it up to you. That said, I…”
