Game of Change - Kim and Courtney play

    by: Morphology Author IconMail Icon
As they parked and made their way inside, Josh called out. "Mom, I'm home and I brought some guests." Making their way into the living room, Josh saw his Mom and sisters watching some corny romantic movie where everything seems too good to be true. "Oh, this is Emily and we..." He gestured between himself and Jenn. "invited her over to play a board game. Did any of you want to play with us?" He asked, but was surprised by the answer that he got.

"Wait a new game?" Courtney asked as she quickly got up from where she was sitting on the sofa while playing a game on her phone. "I want top play." She added throwing her brother in a loop.

Turning to Jenn, Josh whispered just loud enough for her to hear. "What is going on, she hasn't acted this excited to play something with me since... well forever." He tried to think back to when she was like this, but it was so far in the past that he wasn't able to remember it correctly.

Nodding her head, Jenn agreed. "Yeah, I wonder if its the game influencing her." She hypothesized glancing down at the game in her hand. "How about we play and see what it can do?" The look of concern on Josh's face caused her to giggle slightly. "Don't worry, I actually want to play it and see what it can do."

Tentative at first, Josh slowly started to nod his head. "Fine, but we stop if anything gets too weird, I'm afraid it might." He said to her as they put the game box on the nearby table. Looking around, he could see Emily and Courtney already sitting at the table, eager to play the game. "Mom did you want to play too." He asked her seeing her mill about in the kitchen, finishing up some undone tasks.

"Sure, sweetie." She told him while putting up some plates. "I'll play that game with you, its been a while since most of us have sat down to play something together." She continued after bringing everyone a glass of water and wiping her hands on her apron.

They all looked at the wooden box that sat on the table. "This is the Game of Change, so lets play." Jenn announced as she opened up the box revealing the top splitting down the middle to fold onto the sides with what looked like brass hinges. They all looked at the inside of the game to find the center of the game looked to have a glass bubble with a pair of dice inside. Around the glass dome a path wound around the inside of the game with all with the same white colored squares. The sides of the game held the rules and the game pieces for them to use. Seeing the written material, Jenn immediately started to read it aloud. "Welcome to the Game of Change, where you inner most feeling bubble to the surface. To begin the playing, pick the game piece to represent you on your journey of discovery." As she said this, a hidden drawer opens to reveal 6 different colored game pieces. Yellow, green, blue, purple, orange, and pink colored pieces lay undisturbed until just recently.

"I choose pink!" Courtney yelled as she quickly grabbed her favorite color.

"I will choose..." Josh started but all the other started to grab their colored pieces. Emily got green, Jenn got purple, Kim got Orange. "I guess I will choose blue." He announced as he went to grab the colored piece that he wanted.

"Now that everyone has chosen their piece, the oldest player shall start and go clockwise around table. The player that makes it to the end shall win the game and pick one change for each player to keep." She finished turning the page over to see if it continued, but nothing was there.

Emily, with a confused look on her face, started to move the green piece around in her hand. "Change?" She asked as she looked back at Jenn. "I know its called the Game of Change, but I don't get it. If I don't understand, I don't want to play." She sighed about to toss her game piece back into the drawer, but didn't seem to get it right and tossed it onto the game board instead. As it landed, it fell to its side and instantly bolted upright and moved to the start section of the game. "What the hell." She exclaimed as she watched all the other game pieces fl out of the other's hands and join her piece at the start section.

With each piece landing at the start section, an odd light started to shine from the middle of the game board. Just slightly above the glass dome, what looked like a holographic image began to show. 'Welcome players to the Game of Change where players discover new things about themselves. Just like Player Jenn said earlier, the winner gets to pick one change to become permanent for the losers.'

"How did it know I read the rules?" Jenn asked confused looking at Josh and Emily, who shrugged their shoulders.

'I am the Game Master and I over see the game.' The message read from the middle. 'To leave the game before it is finished will result in a penalty and to delay the game will result in a penalty.' The others looked around the room to see nothing but darkness. It appeared as if the area outside of the room didn't exist. 'Player Kim has been designated as the first to roll the dice. If you don't roll, it will be considered a forfeit and a penalty will be given.'

Everyone glanced over at Kim who tentatively put her hand on the glass dome and pressed down. "Looks like I rolled a _____." She reached out to touch her game piece but watched with awe as it started to move on its own.
