Ruth Shaw returned to the station after her usual day of handing out parking tickets. Ruth parked her “clown car,” as everyone called it, in its spot before making her way through the building.
“Oh my,” An elderly man called as he sat in the waiting area. “Did you lose your Mommy, little girl?”
“Back off!” Ruth responded.
From behind the reception desk, there was a chuckle. “Hey, Shaw!” Diaz greeted. “Back from parking patrol?”
“Go to Hell, Diaz!” The brunette woman responded.
“There’s our mascot!”
“Missing kids, wait in the reception area; there are some fun toys to play with!”
“Need a place to sleep? My kid’s at her mother’s house this week!”
Ruth ignored the jeers of her fellow officers as she made her way to the chief’s office. “Yes, Ma’am,” Chief Duncan responded to his phone. “I understand.”
“Chief!” The shrunken woman declared as she barged into the office, “We need to talk!”
Duncan sighed before sitting, “Shaw, we’ve been over this. You don’t need to give your records to me directly.”
“I’m sick of this, Chief!” The angered officer explained. “Six months ago, you said I was on my way to becoming the youngest detective in the history of this precinct!”
“That was before…” Duncan began.
“Before I caught SV,” Ruth finished, “I know.”
“Shaw,” The chief continued. “I need officers who can protect themselves in the field. You need to realize, Shaw. shrinkees are the hot topic right now, especially in the government. If you get killed, we’ll all be out of a job.”
“But I should be out there catching criminals!” The shrunken woman argued.
“Look, Shaw,” Duncan groaned. “It’s not easy for me either. Do you think I like getting a call whenever you write a ticket so people know you’re a real cop?”
“So, I’m just supposed to keep playing meter maid until I retire?” Ruth demanded.
“Look at it this way, Shaw,” The chief responded. “You’re out there showing people shrinkees aren’t helpless.” When Ruth groaned in response, Duncan sighed. “Look, I promise that if I find anything different, I’ll put you on it. But, right now, I need to talk to a judge about a drug bust, so I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Ruth groaned once more before leaving the office in a huff.
