Awkward Family Dinner

    by: Andes2020 Author IconMail Icon
After an awkward hug that made Chris feel like he was being enveloped by sweaty pillows that smelled of a deep fryer.

Smiling only served to add dimples to Alex’s plush face that still had traces of ketchup and mustard.

Following her and their mom back inside showcased the wobbling mass of ass fat that was his sister’s rear. Crammed into the leggings, with a prominent ass shelf that peeked over the waistband, the slab of lard bounced and rolled with her slow waddle. Compressed by the garment the mountain of adipose contained some of its jiggle.

Alex plopped herself down on a dining-room chair causing it to groan in protest. Child bearing hips cascading over the edges.

As their mother brought out their food Chris tried to reconcile the blubber bottomed behemoth with who he remembered his sister as.

“So, like, we got this new manager. Total dick.” Alex said as she paused her inhalation of food. “He said we can only have one entree during our shift. Like, what the fuck?”

“Well, Lexxi that’s probably for the best. You know you need to cut back.”

“Ugh…Mom! I told you, I only get the salad.”

Chris made a point not to mention that salads didn’t usually have ketchup or mustard in them.

Chris rubbed at his temple. How had his sister, captain of the cheer squad, college athlete, honors graduate, corporate shark, become…this?

“Hey I gotta…go to the bathroom real quick.”

Alex barely acknowledged as she attacked the mashed potatoes. His mom just smiled, happy to have her kids at the house.

Closing the door behind him, Chris pulled out his phone and began thumbing through social media. Where was the picture of Alex’s promotion? Nothing. He opened up her profiles. Gone were the photos of her hiking trip in the Appalachians, no photos of her weekend running group, nothing from her at ConTech…

All replaced. Replaced by inspirational quotes. Stills from video games. A couple carefully cropped and angled selfies. A few references to weed. A family gathering Chris didn’t attend. Thumbing through was like watch a gradual weight-loss, months, years sloughing off excess pounds and increasing the number of pictures. It wasn’t until he got to just after high-school that she looked how he remembered, a bit softer maybe, but almost exactly like he remembered her from over 10yrs ago.

A knock on the door.

“Chris? You ok?” His mother called. “Your sister and I are getting worried.”

“Maybe you should be worried at why your daughter looks like a damn blimp.” Chris muttered.

“What was that?”

“Nothing. Coming right out.”

Alex was where he left her. Looking a bit sheepish and a bit sleepy.

“Hey, thanks again for coming tonight.” Alex smiled at him.

Their mom busied herself with the plates, taking them to the kitchen.

“Oh…uh yeah…of course.”

“It’s just like, it’s good to see you again. It’s been way too long. *URP* .”Alex barely attempted to stifle a burp that rolled across the table and smacked Chris in the face.

“I mean…not all that *ahem*…all that long.” Chris said as he fanned the air in front of him.

“Well…sure five years isn’t super long, but still.”

Five. Years.

He’d avoided her for five years. His own sister. The thought hurt, even if she looked, well, looked like she ate three of the sister he remembered and then went back for dessert.

He saw the merest hint of a tear in her eye and felt a twinge of guilt.

“Uh yeah, I guess it has been a bit. Sorry about that.”

Alex smiled. Chris felt his guts squirm.
