Chapter #5

The Next Day

Gabby had almost forgotten what it was like not to wake up stiff from sleeping in her car. The bed she spent the night in was almost too good to be true.

But the alarm clock sounded at 4:00 AM, which was definitely not too good. Ah well, she thought, as she pulled herself out of bed, at least I have a job, and a bed to sleep in.

Walking into the bathroom, she was surprised to see that her black eye had faded. She wouldn't need to cover it with makeup anymore, just like she didn't need to wait for an available shower. Showering, washing her hair, brushing her teeth; she felt like a person again.

As Ed had promised, she found a waitress uniform hanging in the closet, a pink number with white trim, and a white nametag pinned in place. It fit her perfectly.

Stepping out of her bedroom, she found the other two in the common room. "Hope I didn't keep you waiting too long," she said. "It's only been a few days, but I missed the creature comforts."

"Not at all," Mike replied. He indicated a tray on a cart. "Help yourself to some breakfast."

Lifting the cover, she saw pancakes and sausage with eggs over easy, with milk and coffee. She turned to Ed. "How'd you know I was hungry for this?"

"I didn't," they answered. "I didn't make this; it's provided by Management."

"They do good work." The food was as hot as if it just came off the griddle, while the milk seemed to have just been taken out of the fridge.

As she ate, she asked, "Any idea what we'll be dealing with once we open the doors?"

"Mike has a sixth sense about that," Ed replied, "from all the time he's spent here. He says it's Arkansas, sometime in the '50s."

"Thanks for the heads-up; not everyone in that time and place is tolerant of Latinas. Good thing I have this breakfast to fill up on."

Once they were all ready, they walked out the door and into the diner. After turning on the lights marrying the ketchup bottles and putting napkins out at all the tables and booths, they turned on the neon sign, and unlocked the doors at 6:00 AM.
