Chapter #3

His body

by: Matt Wii Author IconMail Icon
Being the big man on campus, amazing. Finding out you’ve been dying for months, horrible. For Mark, this was his reality.

The high school star quarterback loved his life as he was a man every man and woman lusted over. Women thirsted over his height and muscles while men grew jealous of how smooth he was and his talents both on and off the field. Life was pretty perfect up until a couple months ago when Mark received news he’d struggle to comprehend.

Around 2 months ago, Mark began to complain about headaches. The pain constantly shot through his mind and made him almost collapse every time they struck. Eventually, Mark visited the doctor who was shocked to discover a brain eating parasite living in Mark’s head. Instantly, doctors tried their best to address the situation as Mark was put through surgeries not too long after the diagnosis. Tragically, these surgeries were no use as the parasite had eaten away at too much of Mark’s brain to make him fully functional. Mark’s brain was on the verge of shutting down as the doctors realized the boy had only a couple months to live.

The situation was devastating to the Johnson family as Mark was left in the hospital bed, barely clinging onto life. Mark’s mind continued to worsen over the next 2 months and eventually led to today where his brain was practically dead.

The hospital room was quiet as Mark’s mother and father sat in chairs next to his bed. The couple embraced each other as they began to realize that perhaps things were not going to change and their son was about to die. Mark’s mother began to tear up as the hospital room’s door slowly opened and the doctor stepped into the room. Mark’s mother snapped her head up and stared at the doctor as he gave a slight smile.

“Please doc, tell me some good news,” Mark’s mother, Cindy, asked. The doctor tried his best to maintain the fake smile as he pulled out his clipboard.

“I’m sorry ma’am, I don’t have much good news to give you,” he replied as Cindy began to weep into her husband’s arms. Mark’s father, Joe, hugged his wife as he tried his best to keep himself emotionally in control. He hated seeing his son dying but he especially hated seeing his wife crying over it.

“I hate saying this but… Mark’s mind has only gotten worse. At this point, his brain is completely gone. Removing the parasite has prevented his organs from being affected but his brain has continued to decay,” the doctor stated as Joe’s face went pale and Cindy continued to cry. The doctor put the clipboard down and approached the couple as he placed his hands on both their backs.

“I’m sorry, I really am. We tried our best.” The doctor’s smile faded as he felt upset over seeing Joe and Cindy crying and thinking about how he couldn’t save Mark.
