Hope seemed like any other girl,... until she started growing feathers!

Chapter #1

Coming Out of My Shell

    by: BeeJay Author IconMail Icon
Hi. My name's Hope Downey.

My life is mostly pretty normal. I'm the middle child in my family. My dad's an orthodontist, and my mom's a nutritionist. My older brother is Dave, and my kid sister is Terri.

Outside of my family, my best friends are Jodie Crane and Amie Rodant. Well, I shouldn't really call Jodie my best friend, because she's more than that. She gave me my first kiss. Before the big thing started, we'd gotten to second base together.

I started out normally enough. I was in decent shape (having a mom who's a nutritionist means you don't eat the bad stuff often). I had pretty blue eyes, and a gorgeous head of blonde hair.

I don't have that hair anymore.

******************************

The day before it started was just a week before my fourteenth birthday.

It was memorable for me because I got my first period. It was a bit of a bummer to me, because my favorite jeans became my period jeans. Mom was philosophical about it: "You're not a woman until you've got blood on your favorite pants," she said.

Jodie and Amie came over to celebrate the occasion with me. Terri took the opportunity to satisfy her curiosity; she was only ten years old, but she was looking forward to wearing a training bra. "What are periods like?" she asked. "Like, what's it like before it happens?"

"It's different for every girl," I said. "For me, my boobs hurt for days before I got it."

"I got a craving for berries and cream," said Amie.

"I'd rather have either of those than break out," said Jodie. Pointing to her nose, she added, "This thing is big enough already without zits."

"Hey," I said, gently turning her head to face me; "that nose is part of you, and I love it." To emphasize the point, I kissed her nose.

"You see?" Amie asked. "It's different for everybody. Here's hoping your glands don't decide to make you look like you've eaten too much."

Little did we know what else your body can do to you.

******************************

The next morning, I woke up like I had any other day. Then I remembered that I was on my first period, and I was less than a week from turning 14. I wonder what I'll be like as a woman? I thought.

I put a hand to my chest, and paused. Something didn't feel right.

I looked down, and gasped.

There, right between my breasts, was a white feather, sticking out of my skin.
