The jumping spider landed precisely where it wanted, and immediately all eight legs kicked into gear as the lion-sized arachnid scrambled across the tabletop, closing the gap between it and its vulnerable prey.
The little man had started running before the airborne spider reached the wooden surface of the table and scurried over the three-inch gap between it and him.
His goal was to reach the safety of the box. He could seal the box from inside, denying the spider access.
The contest, however, would be determined by whether bug-sized Mr. Smith's two legs were faster than the spider's eight.
The spider also had one other advantage, as its name of jumping spider implied. As its prey pulled out of reach and seemed close to ducking inside the box, the spider's brain sent signals for its legs to prepare for a powerful, well-aimed leap.
"Yes," Mr. Smith gasped as he arrived at the narrow entrance into the box.... just as the spider's leap flung its horrendous body toward him.
