About This Newsletter

What little things help you to express your faith? Faith is not just about the grand buildings and large gestures - there are many smaller ways.

This week's Spiritual Newsletter is all about the small and the simple, yet meaningful.

Letter from the editor

When thinking of religion, people’s thoughts tend to go to churches and temples, solstice festivals by standing stones, painted ceilings with so much detail you could spend days gazing up at them – the gatherings, the buildings, the symbols… but faith can be expressed through the little things.

Many of us say prayers, and though the content may vary, it is not necessary to be in an official place of worship to say them. Anyone can pray, in any place and at any time. Silent prayers are especially good for this – someone may be sitting next to you, praying, and you’d never know it. It’s pretty great to have that open line of communication.

There are people who like some assistance with their prayers, or make an offering of some sort to go with it. For example, the lighting of a candle is a common way to send up a prayer. I remember going on travels with my family; we’d stop by various churches, put some money in the donation box and light a candle. My dad sometimes lights a candle by a picture of his parents, in prayer and remembrance. People may light a candle for loves ones, or even to support those who are suffering on the other side of the planet. There are no rules, only care and respect.

A friend of mine loves minerals and likes to look up what they are supposed to be beneficial for. There are a lot of beliefs tied to various minerals, from healing properties to the absorption of negative energy and protection against evil. I personally like minerals because they’re pretty – I’ve never ventured into the more spiritual side of things. Even when I was a kid I loved to bring home pretty rocks, and when I got a little older I attended a few mineral fairs. But to other people they hold different meanings, and as long as people do not forego modern medicine when necessary, then that is fine – whatever benefits them.

Another friend uses affirmations. She has written down words and phrases that she finds inspiring, on colourful strips of paper, and even done these cute little drawings with them. Some she uses as bookmarks, others she keeps with her for when she needs a boost. She also thinks of all of the things that she has to be thankful for. This can be very difficult when times are hard – but that is the time when those uplifting thoughts are the most necessary. I confess that I struggle with this myself. I am always thankful for the basics – having a roof over my head, food on the table, money to pay my bills. My husband, my cats, family. I will never fail to be grateful for those. But when I am feeling miserable it is difficult to think beyond those basics. To see the lighter side of life. I guess that’s why I tend to just pray – I can vent about whatever is bothering me when I do that. I admire the people who can always find something good and positive to think of, no matter what.

I read about someone who had a gratitude jar. Whenever something happened that she was thankful for, she’d write it down on a piece of paper and stick it in a jar. Then at the end of the year she’d go through all of the pieces of paper in the jar and have all of those positive memories to look back on. I think that’s a super sweet idea, actually. One that I may try at some point. It sounds like a great way to end the year, and then when the jar is empty, it makes space for a whole new round of positive experiences.

There are people who express their faith through poems, and stories, and songs. I have written a few poems about my beliefs and hope to write more someday. It’s not so easy for me to express my exact faith, because it’s not tied to any particular religion, it’s more of a personal thing (though as I believe in God and Jesus it probably falls under Christianity somewhere). I think there is something special, though, to writing a piece of that nature, especially when others respond to it, finding it uplifting. It brings that sense of shared joy and community, and it doesn’t really matter what faith the other person belong to, only that it struck a chord.

There are many ways, then, to express and practice one’s religion, and often these expressions can be found in the little things – from a candle to a mineral, an affirmation or a poem, there is a lot of good to be said for the small, the quiet, the simple ways of living our faith.

What are some of the smaller ways you practice your faith?

Wishing you a week filled with inspiration,
