Character Maps and an Outline for Book One Underway |
|
After the horrible mess of my first attempt and time spent really preparing I had a realistic plan and learned to rely on one of my strengths. If I have a natural strength in writing it is in the planning phase. I write what I know based on my education and research. My professional background before retiriement in law and enginnering required planning and research, it is my natural inclination. So, I try to play to this strength without going too far. You have to leave room for changing direction and on the fly intuition. I'm also a visual thinker, I start with two tools before I start the first draft of a novel. Both are sheets of paper taped together. A timeline of sorts with a kind of flow chart of the story as a kind of visual outline. I break it into part one, part two, and part three. The other piece is a character map, with pictures of famous people, or people I have seen or cartoons. A name, very short description of the characteristics and relationship lines. |
