A poem of memory fragments of a white water raft trip. |
| Costa Rican river Six-person rubber raft Helmets and life preservers Into the current, easy paddling Sound of roaring waters White foam ahead Anticipation and excitement Current quickens Pulse quickens Raft dips and rises Churning white water surrounds Holy Cow! Paddle! Paddle harder! Lean in, avoid the rock Paddle for all you’re worth! Water over the sides Water washing over you Speeding out of control Oh, God! Heart-pounding exhilaration Grimacing from the effort The water is master The raft rises and falls Fight for control Paddle! What a wild ride! The current slackens Paddle harder! Back under control Calm water Drifting with the flow Whew! Laughter, smiles all around That was great! Bring on the next set of rapids.
