A free verse poem about a glorious idea. |
| This idea won’t die. It cannot forever remain enslaved. Governments cannot kill it. It is stronger than prisons or torture or tanks. This idea emboldens men, making common men into heroes. This idea leads men to tunnel under walls, to cross oceans in unseaworthy crafts, to risk death in order to escape tyranny. This idea sparks revolutions to win it and wars to defend it. This idea lives and breathes in the hearts and minds of people everywhere. Time and again, from being whispered by a clandestine few it has swept across the land to be shouted by the masses. Freedom! Freedom! What a glorious human idea … that the individual man has a right to personal freedom.
