Complex Numbers

A complex number is expressed in the standard form a + bi, where a and b are real numbers and i is defined by i^2 = -1 (that is, i is the square root of -1). For example, 3 + 2i is a complex number.

The bi term is often referred to as an imaginary number (though this may be misleading, as it is no more "imaginary" than the symbolic abstractions we know as the "real" numbers). Thus, every complex number has a real part, a, and an imaginary part, bi.

Complex numbers are often represented on a graph known as the "complex plane," where the horizontal axis represents the infinity of real numbers, and the vertical axis represents the infinity of imaginary numbers. Thus, each complex number has a unique representation on the complex plane: some closer to real; others, more imaginary. If a = b, the number is equal parts real and imaginary.

Very simple transformations applied to numbers in the complex plane can lead to fractal structures of enormous intricacy and astonishing beauty.

when I saw this. On the bright side, if the author smokes enough weed, maybe this kind of phrasing will fall by the wayside. In that case, uh, yay, weed?

Obviously this means my car smells powerfully of weed, which is not really a problem until I have to use valet parking

Thank some entity that I don't work in valet parking for a living. Otherwise, yeah I could see things ending badly if I have to park a car reeking of weed. Unfortunately, my autism is the variety where I have a rather sensitive sense of smell. Today I noticed the smell of green beans while trimming them to prep for a recipe I was trying for the first time. Green beans tends to not be pungent veggies. If I can smell green beans when chopping them raw, a hotboxed car is going to be an olfactory nightmare. On top of that, if there's been recently smoked weed involved, I admit I do worry about getting secondhand exposure thanks to my history of medication sensitivities. I hallucinate when on Vicodin. I worry that weed will cause an even more adverse reaction, and getting that secondhand is not great.

Clearly, the author's been lucky enough to never be stopped by cops, either.

I do not want to use this word, but there is no way around it. The author has some notable privilege up in here. There's no way in hell I'd be able to get away with something like this, even though some states (such as Minnesota

) have made laws to prevent cannabis ordor from being the sole reason to search a vehicle. Even if it's not legal to do that, well, if there are other factors at play (like a BIPOC driver), the cops will give zero fucks.

(Side note: mi amor and I half jokingly state he's my white male chaperone. He's even taken to making sure he's along for the ride if I'm driving outside the Twin Cities in case I do get pulled over by any law enforcement vehicles while in [semi] rural areas.)

Boy, I sure am lucky my parents didn't make me get hooked on drugs or alcohol, it's bad enough they fostered my caffeine addiction.

This was delightfully informative and I thank you for that. I should have done my senior thesis on cussing. It would have been fun to research and present orally. Of course, that was waaaaaaaay before the days of the internet.

I had to Google Quim. I had a feeling it might be related to C U Next Tuesday, and I wasn't wrong. I like having an antiquated version of that word.

And Waltz, what were you doing using the modern version of Quim in a Panera? Do I want to know?

I like creativity in my cursing. This is a fine example from the BBC TV series "Wolf Hall", delivered with feeling by the recently deceased Bernard Hill (who is probably most well-known outside the UK for his role as Theoden in Lord OfThe Rings).
