The simplicity of my day to day. |
This is where I write my thoughts, feelings and my daily trials, tribulations and happy things

Describe something(s) you experience with each of your senses every spring, and/or write about what an ideal spring day could be like. I’m going to change the time of the year from Spring to Autumn because in Australia that’s the season we’re in. The days are idyllic now after the hottest summer on record. Days of 45 Centigrade just about finished me this year. It’s been horrendous. But now, oh boy, it’s beautiful. Days of temperatures not exceeding 30C and cool nights so sleeping is possible once more. The trees, even though it has not yet rained since November are definitely showing signs that they won’t die. Sight: I can see the little birds are flitting around looking for nesting material so they can hatch another few eggs before winter. Smell: Autumn has that special smell, hard to explain but it’s a smoky smell, it could be people are preparing for winter and burning a few dead leaves and branches. Taste: The taste buds are preparing for heavier meals instead of endless cold meals and salads because it’s been too hot to cook. Touch: I can touch my steering wheel without getting third degree burns! Hearing: I can hear the sounds of different birds as they return from cooler climes. Soon the wetlands will fill again and the swans and Pelicans will be back in their home in the wetland near my home and I will see them once more on my daily walk. |
Prompt: In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or step back into safety.” — Abraham Maslow It’s like being at a crossroads when safety might mean just more of the same. even if it’s not pleasant, it still feels a good choice because it’s familiar. How many women have stayed with abusive partners because they’re afraid to leave and step forward into growth if you like. The unknown is a scary place. This week I’ve almost pulled the pin on my upcoming surgery because I don’t know, can’t know, what the outcome will be. I could not have the surgery to reconstruct torn gluteal tendons and hope I’ll still be able to walk unaided in five or ten years time or bite the bullet, get it done and hope it improves my remaining years. If I decide against it then my deadline is Monday to let the surgeon know my decision. I’ve already had the same surgery on my right hip and know the long recovery and I’m not looking forward to repeating it on my left. Anyway today’s prompt sent my thoughts to me having to make what seems to be a difficult choice. Life is full of choices, we make them every day. Some are life changing. The biggest choice I made was to leave my family and country to live on the other side of the world where I knew no one. A leap of faith. That’s what we need to take, sometimes. |
Emily Segal said,"from within me came highs of excitement, a sleep deficit, and a pervasive hum of anxiety.” Let this sentence influence your writing today. Have fun! Oh, wow, that’s just how I’m feeling today! I’ve been attempting to write my next chapter for a combined novel which my local writing group is putting together. There are eight of us, each has a character to write. The story involves a bushfire which devastates a small community. Who lit the fire? That’s the thread going through the novel. Red herrings abound. There’s even an historic corpse which turns up after the fire, her murderer brought to justice after so many years of getting away with her killing. My character is a fireman who has a huge back story. It’s been an interesting and challenging thing to attempt, with none of us having done this before has led to the process taking far longer than we first thought it would. Consequently there’s been highs of excitement, a sleep deficit and a pervasive hum of anxiety! |
The International Day of Forests is held annually on 21 March to raise awareness of the importance of forests to people and their vital role in poverty eradication, environmental sustainability and food security. Let trees inspire your writing today, like what kind is your favorite? Did you climb trees as a child? I love trees. I live in the hills above the city and am surrounded by trees. We always are concerned about forest fires of course but I couldn’t live anywhere else. We visit the beach very occasionally and I find the glare too much. I always say that there is too much sky at the beach! When I was a child I would sneak away to my favourite place which was the stump of a tree. It was like a little chair with a back on it which was caused when it was felled. I adore the smell of the eucalyptus trees after rain, especially the lemon scented gums. My very favourite tree is a neighbour’s tree. It’s a massive Morton Bay. Its roots are like buttresses holding it firmly into the ground. The branches spread far and wide, shading several houses. Some of the neighbours complain about the mess as it drops tiny berries at certain times of the year. But I stop and stare in wonder at its magnificence, at how it continues to grow even larger each year and I can’t even guess how many years it has been standing vigil over our homes. I once wrote a story about a little girl with red shoes who was hiding in that tree |
Prompt: Happiness is to hold flowers in both hands. Japanese Proverbs. Write about this quote in your Blog entry today. I do love flowers but not cut flowers. I rarely buy flowers for anyone much preferring to buy a plant, something pretty which will last much longer than a bunch. So happiness is holding flowers? I’d have to disagree with that statement. Happiness is much more fleeting. It can be felt when witnessing a child laughing, or when receiving a well meant hug from someone you care about or when getting an unexpected piece of good news. I don’t think we experience happiness each day, the best we may feel is contentment, satisfaction, maybe a moment of bliss when sitting down after being rushed and sipping a lovely cup of coffee or tea. Or soaking in a warm bubble bath and letting the stresses of day go for a while. So I’d change the quote to ‘happiness is looking at beautiful flowers growing in the sunshine in their natural environment.’ |
Day 3042--March 19, 2024 Prompt: Fear “Fear doesn't shut you down; it wakes you up.” Veronica Roth, Divergent What makes you afraid and how do you handle fear? I’ll try to list my fears. 1. Fear of suffocation 2.Choking. Either myself or others, especially babies. 3. Deep ocean. That’s the fear of the unknown I suppose. Not knowing what is about to take a bite out of my leg at any second. 4.Being swept out to sea and drowning. 5. Anything terrible happening to anyone I love. Such as, illness, accidents and any of the above list. 6. Not having control of situations, such as being in hospital and anesthetics. 7. My partner dying and leaving me alone 8. The death of my dog. 9. Dying a protracted death in pain. 10. Pain. How do I handle fear? Usually in the past I’d try not to overthink and just DO IT! I have done many of the things which could have led to the above list. I’ve scuba dived in deep water. I’ve abseiled off a cliff. I’ve fed many babies and dealt with many choking incidents. I’ve been in a few road accidents I’ve had serious surgeries I’ve gone through many dog deaths. What am I not afraid of? Death. Heights. House fires. |
Prompt: Luck Since it was St. Patrick's Day, yesterday, what do you think of the lucky Irish? Or if you wish, write your thoughts on the theme of luck and how it has played a role in your life. I don’t really believe in luck. Having said that, I do believe that I’ve been fortunate throughout my life. Having parents who stayed together had a big part to play in my happiness as a child. My parents always loved each other dearly and having two people who love each other and who brought happiness to the household was good for the children of that marriage . Therefore I knew what a happy marriage looked like and consequently I’ve attempted to replicate my parents relationship and have a happy home. It’s not always been easy though, we’ve had to work at marriage often. But our three kids all have said they’d had a happy childhood. Luck? I don’t know. We both worked in the horse racing arena and gambling. The people we mixed with all took luck very seriously. But having seen the heartache gambling can bring we steered right away from it. Luck has nothing to do with winning or losing. Health wise. I look around at other eighty year olds and think that maybe we both have been lucky. Although I’ve had more than my fair share of ill health and still do, we at least can go for a walk with the dog each morning. Yes, I have seen people who seem to have terrible luck throughout their lives with all manner of things. Accidents, misfortunes from flooding or fires, illness etc. One does wonder why they seem to attract bad luck or is it simply a numbers game? |
Use these words in your blog today: mixture, character, marble, division, basketball, expertise, and role. Well, today’s words are certainly a mixture! My role today is to put them into a paragraph or two which will make some sort of interesting reading. I could tell you about the endless, might I even say boring hours of watching various children and grandchildren attempt to master the sport of basketball. I don’t believe any of them rose from out of the bottom division, yet my role was to cheer from the sidelines. but I’m sorry to report none of them had the expertise needed to ever be the champions they aspired to be. Look, I’m no sportswoman myself, the only game I enjoyed was playing marbles when I was a kid. I was a character in my own stories which I started to write even as a small child. I’d write about the tournaments which lasted for hours with myself as the conquering victor. I’d return home having beaten the other kids, winning their best marble, the big one. Any marble larger than the majority would be termed a boulder, bonker, masher, plumper, popper, shooter, thumper, smasher, bumbo, crock, bumboozer, bowler, tonk, tronk, godfather, tom bowler, fourer, giant, dobber, dobbert, or biggie. |

Use these fun words in your entry today: learn, quarrel, register, barrier, pan, night, stock, scream, and me. I have no quarrel with people who feel strongly about climate change enough protest. But instead of registering their concerns so as to not upset or inconvenience people going about their business, they form a barrier on highways preventing traffic from moving for hours. A young mother about to give birth was forced to do so on the side of the road because she was unable to get to the hospital. Her scream of anguish still didn’t make the protesters clear the road. If it was up to me, I’d make the penalties greater than they are when groups such as Extinction Rebellion cause harm or sometimes even death to innocent citizens trying to go about their business. I think these groups need to learn their actions are hurting others and although everyone knows they are doing their protesting to get the attention of the government and do so coming from a good place, could they sleep soundly at night if their actions caused the deaths of a mother and her baby? They ought to take stock and reconsider their actions. There has to be a better way to help the earth other than causing even more stress to the overworked, underpaid citizens who are trying to get by day to day. Climate change is a problem for the world. There are few now who don’t believe and governments all over the world are attempting to lower emissions caused by human behaviours. When one thinks of the great highways around the world such as The Pan-American Highway a network of roads stretching across the Americas, measuring about 30,000 kilometres (19,000 mi) in total length. How can groups such as Extinction Rebellion hope to make a difference to the damage human beings are causing? |
