Prompt:
“Friendship marks a life even more deeply than love. Love risks degenerating into obsession, friendship is never anything but sharing.”
Elie Wiesel
What are your thoughts on friendship, generally or personally speaking?

Throughout my life I have had different feelings about the importance of friends. I’ve never felt the need for a large group of friends. At school I always had one special friend, we were together every day for over ten years until we left school and as happens when we went on our separate ways, it was as heartbreaking as any close relationship ending is. I visited her when I returned to England to see my family. It had been over forty years since this friend and I had been in contact. I knocked on her door and asked her to “fill me in on what’s been happening since I saw you last!” We sat and talked in her kitchen as if we’d never missed a day.
Nowadays I have a group of friends but only a very few whom I know I can depend on in a crisis. I hope they feel they can depend on me too.
Friendships can be hard work sometimes, some people expect too much from a friend. I’ve experienced this in the past and it can be a difficult situation. My friends and I can survive long absences and when we do catch up we simply carry on where we left off. That’s a sign of true friendship.
