How to Read the Tarot

Begin by brewing a cup of tea,
a nervine, lemon balm or chamomile,
this is after all, your future.
A reading at the dark of the moon is best,
before the night creatures crawl
and bad humours fill the air.
Pick a circular deck, with a fairy-tale motif,
and no reversals.
Hold a question in your heart,
shuffle the cards and place them on the table.
Choose only two.
Like the ancient Israelites,
these are your seer stones, Urim and Thumimm,
black and white, yes or no.
Isn't that all you were asking?

Quintessence

Rainbow ponies dance
at the edge of space and time.
Our life is a patchwork picture quilt.
Death is a gift,
a staircase star trip
bringing us closer to the heavens
than the cold Karman line.

Waves

I want to smell
like a dry martini
made with expensive gin.
Brisk alcohol, juniper berries,
fresh pine winds
and crashing waves
that dry down to oblivion.

Strap bound and cracked
red calligraphy
dark and named
tap and cry
dusty grimoire.

Edgework

When I see her on the street
pushing her beat up Publix cart
looking for cans and bottles to recycle
I stop to say hello,
ask how she is,
look deep into her eyes
and wait for the knots in my chest
to dissolve.
We are both ghost particles
blazars of edgework
impermanent humans
fielding life's chaos.

Fields

The fields are dancing,
oscillating atoms of sorghum and wheat.
Electric bees lie down on a pillow of grass,
drunk with pollen lust.
All objects fall in the same way
despite mass and substance.
Sometimes you need a shove
to move inertia out of the way,
to stop the turbulent clock's minute hand,
and just lie down, in the yellow heat,
beside the abandoned shed.

I am tired of the world.

Tired of Trump and his dismantling of democracy.

Tired of FaceBook.

Tired of everyone and their petty preoccupations.

My arm still aches a great deal of the time.

I pray. I meditate.

Former neighbors are suing our insurance company for 12,000 in damages. I hate them.

This long and winding road is too long and winding.

I am glad the boys in Thailand are rescued.

What about the immigrant children here?

Lady Liberty

Rise and resist
my heart said go.
Among her robes
I sought shelter.

For Patricia Okoumo--the brave activist that scaled Lady Liberty.

Daughter of the Desert

In the Negev
the Jahalin had a thousand words
for sheep and goats.
I cannot utter one for freedom.
I love the earthy ocher of my land.
Our homes are nylon, tin, and wood.
Our schools are made of mud and tires.
Men have walked on the moon.
Who will make a planet for me?

Dark Goddess Tarot--Siren of Fire--Qadesh--Egyptian Goddess of Pleasure---love what you love deeply

Author's Note: A response to a picture prompt. I imagined this woman as a Bedouin living in East Jerusalem.

Mister Rogers

There may have been
other saints in Pittsburgh,
but I did not meet them.
He walked the wards
of Children's Hospital,
tying kid's shoes
lessening their pain.
He tended the knowing field
anointed others
with an elixir of love.
He never had to chase the moment
but was just there.
He sang to his Lord
and the least of us,
and knew everyone
was our neighbor,
no matter how they arrived.
