O furacão Leslie castigou a região entre Lisboa e o Porto. Eu me pergunto como Nazaré sobreviveu. (Hurricane Leslie battered the region between Lisbon and Porto. I wonder how Nazaré survived.) I've been to the region that was hit: Nazaré, Alcobaça, Coimbra, Porto. Even inland north and east. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5BRIGxZFqc |

Port of Spain (POS) There is nothing quite like sitting in an airport... BUT... I found a nice spot in the 24 hour restaurant. Just a bit of a hidey-hole and I'm good! I'll catch a snooze. I decided on a window seat. Short one hour flight at 6 in the morning. Coffee before 5. Georgetown No visa needed. No hassles. Guesthouse Guyana Paradises... right in front of the park. Well... at the corner of Barima and Campbell in a bright white house with a balcony. It's about 5 blocks to the zoo. Glad I always travel with sheets and a towel. Bunk bed is fine as is the room. Breakfast included... Botanical Gardens Well... it was on the way... kinda... to the Marriott where the others, the GROUP are staying. I like to walk and take pictures. Too late for the early birds, but saw where the small zoo is. I walked down Church Street facing traffic... they drive on the left in Guyana... need to remember that when crossing the street. Some trees to shield me from the sun. I wear my cap and carry my umbrella. I know better... Rained overnight... now a humid 26º... better than smoke! Detoured to capture a picture of blue Radha Krishna Mandir. Got one of the snake as well... Ah... the St. George Cathedral looms in all its white splendor. I'll catch up later. Some photos... and where is the GROUP? ************************************************************ Too early. I went back to the zoo. Wanted to see manatees... which I did! Then hurry hurry to Old St. George's. Since I hadn't met anyone... I was looking for orange hair... we won't say whose... But I found them around 10. Lyn's a sly fox got the Group together... blue streak in her hair and all... Lovely place. ************************************************************ Hmm... a break to pee? Well! When you gotta... ************************************************************ The Rest of the Day I need to learn more about architecture I guess. Is that a rood screen? And dark wood and white looks so Tudor. Boxes for pews. So... European. Cavernous. I looked up at the wood roof... reminded me of the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles in Cartago. Peaceful until ... s.o.m.e.o.n.e ... started to sing. We went to the Promenade for a picnic. Yes, I liked the statue of Ghandi... who wouldn't. It wasn't ME who took a selfie though. Am I too serious for this group? At least Apondia is close to my age. And I suspect 💙 Carly is older than she looks... With me... I'm just plain old. But not dead yet! We went to the Lighthouse. I could hear the Group waving at us from 100 feet below. Me? No 100+ steps for these old legs. I sat with Spacecat . We'd both had long flights and were ready for a nap. I have friends in England so I had to ask where he was from... ... and his opinion of fish and chips! (I told him the best part was the mushy peas.) So he went back to the hotel when the Group rejoined us while I trotted off to the restaurant with the others. I tried to convince BlueMoon to be more adventurous. I was glad that someone ordered a variety of dishes to sample. I like sampling! I made sure there was some fish on that plate though! I was "quiet". These folks know each other, have traveled together... it may take me some time. So back to our beds. They to the hotel. Me to my hostel. It was a bit of a walk but I knew the way and after traveling around the world know how to be careful. I know all about the 10 minutes get-where-you're-going sunsets. My experience in Costa Rica was helpful. The night was still warm and humid though. Ah, the Tropics. Sleep tight, Kåre 5.august.2017 |
Oh... don't even ask... It's 2 a.m. and my flight leaves at 5:40... Who needs sleep... right... RIGHT... It's going to be a looooong-asssss day. Like 23 hours long. Last time I did something this stupid it was Melbourne to Cape Town. Swore I wouldn't do it again... So... Minneapolis then Fort Lauderdale then Port of Spain where I'll sleep on the floor... if they let me... (flashbacks of Los Angeles...) Early flight to Georgetown... like a hummingbird... the mascot of Caribbean Airlines... I'll get there about the same time everyone else does... unless they get caught up in a revolution... I'll be staying at the Hostel Guyana Paradises, which is a good 3 km away from the Marriot... but it's $100 cheaper (I'm cheap... okay? Got a problem with that? Didn't think so...) and it's right by the botanical gardens and zoo! I'm happy. Not sure what our itinerary is... ...it better include some re—lax—a—tion. Or a nap... a nap might do. But I suspect it'll be go-go-go-go-go. Young folks... what can I say. I know some of the group but I haven't met them all in person. Should I be afraid? Be very afraid. Screw the zoo! I'm looking forward to wrestling with these wily writers. I suspect Kit of House Lannister won't be afraid of me though... The others? I'll learn them a thing or two. Peace, Kåre 4 August 2017 1.655 |
3 August... at home... Apparently... I missed my flight... on purpose. I don't have good connections to Miami. Have absolutely no urge to see feather-dusters drooping when there's no breeze. Did I mention I don't like water? Or dancing. So... I'll meet up with everyone in a couple days. I'd like to visit Venezuela. Have friends from there and I've heard it's beautiful... when there aren't riots. The rain would be nice though... dry and smoky here. Nicer if there wasn't a storm brewing in the ABC's. I don't stay in high-end hotels, so I've already advised the powers-that-be that I'll find my own place... thank-you. Plus... I don't like to travel in groups. Get out of your comfort zone they told me! As I warned Fivesixer I'm a bit of a curmudgeon. Thankfully... no one will be reading this. Kåre 3.agosto.2017 |
I should've taken flight insurance, gone to my doctor, and cancelled this trip if so advised. Cattle Class (a.k.a. known euphemistically as "Economy Class") isn't for anyone who isn't 30, trim and slim and healthy. But, I'm a bit ornery and even worse... hard-headed. Merry got me to the airport on-time... which means I waited. That wasn't a problem. In Salt Lake I had enough time to grab food. Then they changed my seat to closer to the front. Okay... But LAX. The gate 31A was in a new area with poor wifi, non-existent food and in my opinion... poorly laid out. I had my long layover made miserable by my flight being delayed. Leaving at midnight is late... leaving after 2 a.m. is sure misery. Ah... seat 23C... aisle seat next to a young woman and child. Great! (We had a wonderful conversation) Until another woman showed up and it turned out there was another assigned to my seat. The steward, who I remembered from an earlier flight, came back... leaving the woman in 23C and changing me! 4C... I asked... is that an aisle seat? Well... he said "if you don't want it..." waving it around like a lottery ticket. So I moved to 1st class. 1st class isn't like Cattle Class. You actually feel human. The children were curled up and us adults sat in wide seats with two arm-rests apiece. The bathroom was nicer. The food? Well... my orange juice came in a GLASS cup! And utensils were metal! Better food and better service. It was time to take a nap. Which I did after listening to Sibelius (2nd Symphony, 7th Symphony, Finlandia). No problem getting through SJO. I arrived two hours late... but Bryan was there waiting for me. And then we took the bus... 1.631 |
To visit; to revisit; to live there. Life does get in the way... Since I don't work I don't get a vacation... but I do travel! I'd love to go back to: 1. Norway. Maybe August. Almost everywhere I've been, but always Solvorn. 2. Taiwan. People are great. Anywhere is fine. 3. Japan. Especially Nara but again... anywhere and hopefully new places. 4. Peru. It's been over 40 years but I remember Arequipa. 5. Oklahoma. I left a piece of myself there. Kansas too. I'd love to visit: 1. Senegal, especially Casamanche. 2. Montenegro and the Balkans. Only visited Beograd and loved it. 3. Kentucky. I crave lush green. 4. Turkey. Istanbul is the only great world city that intrigues me. 5. Antarctica and/or Svalbard. I've never been in a polar area. I'd love to live in: 1. Portugal... I want to go back this Autumn. ... in response to Steph. |
Patterns One can wander down Higgins, mountains in snow-mist, streets barely wet. Or one could cruise in a car, bike down a lane on handle-bars. The point is: You could be here. Ponderosa pines would whisper to your face. Ignore them. A Hellgate wind could whistle through your hair. Ignore it too. I'm here. Standing before you. I'd show you the coffee caverns, the micro-brew taverns, street patterns aligned with the sun, aligned with the river, like argyle... aligned with who-knows-what. Not all lines are straight here. Some bend to the bottle, others to whatever gender you want. "We embrace all here!" Yet, we do not... ...we cherish a way of life that will include you... if we want or if we must. I would wander with you down Higgins, pass by Hellgate High, take a left down University to the university, climb Mt. Sentinel to the "M". From there we could gaze towards Idaho... glazing over the insane patterns of my life. © Kåre Enga [174.9] (3.aprille.2017) |
Ramblings while looking at pictures taken in Dingle, Ireland, June 2nd and 3rd, 2015. The stone B&B stands solid over the once rambling brook. Chimney pots bricked. White houses huddle around the green base of hills. A road rising to meet it. Bright walls of purple, red, yellow, blue—joined to each other like odd shaped beads—strung along an old sheep path, now paved. Bleats dotting a patch of sunlit pasture hemmed by grey stone walls. A modern wall of stone with rhymes and peepholes one peers into. Stained glass. The Meadow Ditch adorns itself with dyed woolies and one cow. A memorial to the mascot of the bay: Funghi the dolphin. Trashed wedged between loose stones, replete with spider webs. Plants clinging to cracks, secure enough to send up spikes of waxy bells. Planted tombstones neglected. How shafts of light beckon one to climb, passing history along the way. Cottage of seaglass-for-sale. Best directions: Where is Dick Macks? —Opposite the church. Where is the church? —Opposite Dick Macks. Haberdashery and goldsmith. Stoned in arches; moonshine glistening on wet pavement. Taste of fish and mushy peas; smell of tomato-fennel bread. Muttering "If it weren't for the famine I'd swear they left because of the weather". I can't get warm. One leaves the soft green hills, the clear blue waters, boats resting in the bay. And enters the fells again. © Kåre Enga [16.march.2017] |
Under the red lanterns Soft music repairs a torn net last century's lament to be able to write emotions sing them hear them years later in a park. You sit as solid as stone pen in your hand the table blank thoughts ready to be scripted. Could I have known you in my youth? How generations pass how we connect yesterday and tomorrow. Sweet taste of tomato on my tongue the polished stone a place to rest the fragrance of New Year's Day surrounds us. I look at you listen to your words heart-sung ...until all is silent... under the red lanterns. © Kåre Enga [28.January.2017] Written first day of the Year of the Rooster, Taipei.
