Book of poems written for the second and third years of the Promptly Poetry Challenge.

2023 Quill Nominee

Poems written for Promptly Poetry Years Two and Three. Year three is four poems short of being complete but, having reached 100, I have run out of room in this book for the last few of 2023. This overflow will be consigned to the previous collection of Promptly poems, named Promptly Poetry.

Hoot Owl

Hoot owl on the wing,
silent in the night,
searching dark places,
innocents abroad,
secret rodent prey,
added to the hoard,
downy nestlings wait,
all of one accord.

Named for whispered death,
feathered Damocles,
dark-robed she races,
hunger on her breath,
murder in her heart,
stealthiest Macbeth,
nature’s sharpened sword,
nightly her reward.

A Short History of the Failed Artist

“How about law?” he asks, all smiles,
”Good grief no,” I answer without a thought.
“Then what about roads, you could go miles?”
“No chance of that, I’ll take the courts.”

Which is how I began my seven years in law,
deceased estates, insolvencies and company liquidations,
armed only with a ballpoint pen clamped in my claw,
and recycled paper to record my ministrations.

This happenstance led me to discover
the creative possibilities of my supplies,
Bic and paper combining hand in glover
to find a style of complete surprise.

Soft yet coarse, the paper sang,
gently caressed by faithful pen,
complications contained by drawing hand
in shaded line and visual zen.

In complexity the drawings grew
from year to year as my skill increased,
until the day it became quite screwed,
I dared not go on - in case it ceased.

I left the law and its art supplies,
changed countries, jobs and circumstance,
turning back to writing seemed so wise,
still pen and paper the tools of chance.

A lonely girl gazes through a window in a great house.

2023 Quill Nominee2023 Quill Finalist

Security

A house of stone,
secure and safe,
and she alone,
a rescued waif,
forever drawn
to gaze beyond
the spreading lawn
and sparkling pond,
to woods afar,
horizons deep,
and evening star,
her dreams to keep;
the window now
a lonely gift,
reminder how
the deepened rift
between her fear
and coddled life
is payment drear
for ended strife.

when caught and brought into the fold,
he’ll take yer to his pot o’ gold.
