Found this linked in a newsletter, and because I know about Thermopylae I came along to look. I love it. Completely modern until the last line and then you're like 'huh?' And it's so out of place but so in place as well. One can almost see Leonidas as a kid playing this game, his buddies in created armor behind him whacking their swords and spears against things as he triumphed in the game to be leader.

An enjoyable read. Around here, all the ice cream parlors close for the winter, so I guess I'll just sit in the parking lot and if anyone asks if I need something I'll answer, “Nope. Guess I’ll just wait for Spring.”

I doubt it. The point of these microscopic stories is that they last for 100 words and that's it. So the most I can hope from them is a quick grin or thought and the reader moves on. This one depends a lot on irony, I suppose.

Hamelin

It’s true about the rats. And there’s a town in Germany called Hamelin. But the matter of the piper being dressed in a sort of two-tone outfit is a total fabrication.

He did try to lead the children away as revenge for not being paid for his services. But the townsfolk rumbled him before he could get them hidden. Just in time, they headed him off at the pass.

His punishment was much worse than being swindled out of his proper remuneration. I’ll not shock you with the details but would advise you never to sample Hamelin’s famous meat pies.
