L'aura del campo

'é a lua, é a lua, na quintana dos mortos'
♣ Federico García Lorca ♣

Higgins Street Bridge, April 25th 2009, Missoula, Montana

L'aura del campo. A breeze in the meadow. So it began the last day of Spring, 2005; on the 16th day of the month of Light of the year 162. This is a supplement to my daily journal written to a friend, my muse; notes I do not share. Here I will share what the breeze has whispered to me.

Campana sobre campana,
y sobre campana una,
asómate a la ventana,
verás el Niño en la cuna.

Belén, campanas de Belén,
que los ángeles tocan
qué nueva me traéis?

Recogido tu rebaño
a dónde vas pastorcillo?
Voy a llevar al portal
requesón, manteca y vino.

Belén, campanas de Belén,
que los ángeles tocan
qué nuevas me traéis?

Campana sobre campana,
y sobre campana dos,
asómate a esa ventana,
porque ha naciendo Dios.

Belén, campanas de Belén,
que los ángeles tocan
qué nueva me traéis?

Caminando a media noche
¿Dondé camina pastor?
te llevare a cuídarte
como a Dios mí corazón

Belén, campanas de Belén,
que los ángeles tocan
qué nueva me traéis?

Chorus :
Il est né le divin enfant,
(He is Born, The Divine Child)
Jouez hautbois, résonnez musettes !
(Oboes play; set bagpipes sounding)
Il est né le divin enfant,
(He is born, The Divine Child,)
Chantons tous son avènement !
(Let all sing His nativity.)

Depuis plus de quatre mille ans,
('Tis four thousand years and more,)
Nous le promettaient les prophètes
(Prophets have foretold His coming,)
Depuis plus de quatre mille ans,
('Tis four thousand years and more,)
Nous attendions cet heureux temps.
(Have we waited this happy hour.)

Chorus

Ah ! Qu'il est beau, qu'il est charmant !
(Ah, how lovely, Ah, how fair,)
Ah ! que ses grâces sont parfaites !
(What perfection is His graces,)
Ah ! Qu'il est beau, qu'il est charmant !
(Ah, how lovely, Ah, how fair.)
Qu'il est doux ce divin enfant !
(Child divine, so gentle there.)

Chorus

Une étable est son logement
(In a stable lodged is He,)
Un peu de paille est sa couchette,
(Straw is all He has for cradle.)

Une étable est son logement
(In a stable lodged is He,)
Pour un dieu quel abaissement !
(Oh how great humility!)

Chorus

Partez, grands rois de l'Orient !
(Go, great Kings of the Orient)
Venez vous unir à nos fêtes
(Come join our celebrations!)
Partez, grands rois de l'Orient !
(Go, great Kings of the Orient,)
Venez adorer cet enfant !
(Come adore our child!)

Chorus

Il veut nos cœurs, il les attend :
He yearns for our hearts, he awaits them,
Il est là pour faire leur conquête
He is here to conquer them.
Il veut nos cœurs, il les attend :
He yearns for our hearts, he awaits them,
Donnons-les lui donc promptement !
So let us give them to him quickly.

Chorus

O Jésus ! O Roi tout-puissant
(O Jesus! O Almighty King!)
Tout petit enfant que vous êtes,
(Such a little child that you are,)
O Jésus ! O Roi tout-puissant,
(O Jesus! O Almighty King!)
Régnez sur nous entièrement !
(Reign over us completely!)

and the sun left and darkness came 8 and the cold of endless nights embraced us but all the same i held you as if the day would never come and in those moments heart to heart i felt the embrace of embers warmth. 50

and the night grew darker still 7 till midnight and mid day became as one and frost lay on theland deep tendrils sending roots to frost our spirits still our song that sustains us and the nights grow long and day light becomes a memory. 54

and the promise i made to you to never let go sustains me through these hours of grief without the relief of knowing whether we will last the night you need not speak nor spare your breath breathe in my warmth until the sun returns 54

as it always does for those who live or die tonight we all are blessed in her sight the snow queen deigns to let go her reigns/reins and returns to her fortress of ice while dim light dawns and gathers strength on far horizons 53

hold me tight as frost melts from your eyes behold the dawn and hw promises are kept by those who know that all shall pass through voids tunnel to rejoin in light every night that hearts beat in harmony to the melody we weave 55

Sinterklaas Kapoentje is December 5th in Holland. And elsewhere... I remember Marloes explaining the holiday to me when we were in Orosi, Costa Rica (the owners of the hostel were also Dutch!). Petra explains what it is in "Saint Nicholas and PeteOpen in new Window. I had a Dutch friend here who celebrated it. Frances always made bags of cookies or chocolates or something. One year she gifted me "Skin so Soft" for my travels. I still have it. Frances and Tweetie from December 2008:

(Dutch)
Sinterklaas Kapoentje,
Leg wat in mijn schoentje,
Leg wat in mijn laarsje,
Dank je Sinterklaasje!
(English)
Saint Nicholas, Little Rascal,
Put something into my little shoe,
Put something into my little boot,
Thank you, little Saint Nicholas!

This is a very old traditional song. The shoes and boots became stockings in the USA.

The song itself is a short poem: 6/6/6/6 with a similar ending -je which is a diminuative. To make a silly remix (because silly works and is memorable) the same cadence is important. Since English rhymes on stressed syllables this might work:

Sinterklaas remix

         for Diane

Here comes sister Shelley.
Here comes brother Billy.
Pat me on my belly.
I'm still hungry, silly.

Sunshine in December

Depression ebbs — anxiety abates.
I mumble to myself:
never too late, never too late.
