Kayla looks around, the edge of town is much quieter, and there’s way fewer houses on the streets. So far, no signs of any weird men, so Kayla found it in herself to relax a bit, and started off in the direction of the houses, although she made sure to keep out of sight of the streetlights.
As she passed by houses, she noticed they were all empty, the doors all locked, all the lights off. All the men were in the middle of the town, she guessed, or doing something else weird. Nothing she could use so far, unfortunately, but she did notice a house with its lights on, so she walked toward it, making sure to go through the backyards to avoid unwanted attention.
It was as she got close that she noticed a figure come out the back door of the house with the lights on and come running toward her. Kayla was about to sprint it, when the figure came into the glow of a streetlight and she saw it was a teenage girl, maybe a little younger than herself.
The girl raised her hand and waved in a “Hey, wait!” gesture, but didn’t yell, which Kayla was thankful for. She ran over to Kayla, a little out of breath.
“Are you new here?” The girl spoke softly, with no hint of any malice, which put her at ease.
“Yeah, I am. My name’s Kayla, by the way.” Kayla held her hand out.
“Sylvie.” The girl responded in kind. “Come with me, it’s not safe just walking around out here like this.”
Kayla gave her offer some thought. She definitely didn’t seem like she had bad intentions, and she was for sure right about it not being safe, so Kayla figured it was the best option for now, and nodded.
“Yeah, let’s go. It’ll be safer once we’re in the house.” and started leading the way, Kayla in tow.
It didn’t take long to reach the back door of Sylvie’s house, she kicked off her loafers and hopped in. Kayla stepped in after her and closed the door behind them. The house was clean and tidy, it looked like they stepped into the kitchen.
“Sylvie, you’re back. Oh, and who did you bring with you?” A voice came from another room. A fat, ugly man walked into the room, his face smiling as he saw Sylvie.
“My dad, Bileam.” Sylvie whispered to Kayla. “Don’t worry, he isn’t like the others, he’s really nice.”
“Your… dad?” Kayla whispered back questioningly. She looked at Sylvie’s pale skin, then to Bileam.
“I’m adopted. He’s been taking care of me for a few years now.” Came the response to her unspoken question. “Oh, she’s Kayla, by the way. She’ll be taking cover here until morning, if that’s good with you?”
“Yes, that’s fine. It’s a frenzy out there.” Bileam responded. “Ah, Sylvie, I’ll need your help again by the way.”
Kayla saw Sylvie playfully roll her eyes. “Again, Dad? I just helped you half an hour ago! Well, it’s fine.” She smirked towards Kayla. “Feel free to do whatever. There’s food if you’re hungry, I’ll be in the living room if you need me.” With that, Sylvie and her dad left, leaving Kayla alone in the kitchen.
Kayla stood awkwardly as she looked around, there were a few bowls of vegetables and some rice on the counter.
