For some reason the right tunnel seemed to be calling out to her. "That one," Julie said, pointing at it. Debbie followed her to the entrance, but balked at the idea of going any farther.
"Are you sure this is safe?" she said tentatively.
"No, but that's what makes it exciting," Julie answered cheerfully.
"If this thing caves in I'm gonna be so fuckin' pissed," Debbie said apprehensively.
Julie didn't think it was much of a threat. Debbie just didn't have anger in her nature. She was always calm and always sweet, and Julie couldn't recall ever seeing her lose her temper.
Leading the way into the tunnel, Julie thought it seemed sturdy enough. Support beams lined the walls and they did not appear to be weakened by rot or termites, but looks could be deceiving. For Julie, putting such thoughts out of her mind was easy, but Debbie didn't seem to share her talent. Her big brown eyes kept tracing along the walls and the ceiling with blatant trepidation.
Still, she pressed onward, following Julie for nearly twenty minutes down the twisting corridor. The tunnel continued to wind deeper into the earth until they came upon a branching tunnel along the southern wall. It sloped into the ground at a steeper incline, and was chiseled out of stone.
