This choice: Apologise: you need Jenny as an ally! • Go Back...Chapter #10Apologising To Jenny by: Unknown A wave of shame washes over you - what the hell are you thinking?! Jenny has always been such a loyal, trustworthy friend to you over the last few years. Why shouldn't she make a perfectly valid suggestion? Even if you don't agree with it, there's no excuse for you to be a complete tool about it!
"Jenny, I'm sorry. Please, don't take what I said personally. I just can't believe that Denise has done this: this offer of hers... it's making me say stupid things. Unfair things. I didn't mean it, honestly."
The redhead receptionist stares at you impassively, her arms folded. "You're right, Rob. You were completely unfair. I was only making a suggestion to you. Who would you rather got the money anyway?"
She still doesn't seem to get it: she's assuming that you are going to be beaten, forced to kiss horrible bare feet whether you want to or not. Yet you suck it up, for the sake of your friendship you know that it'd be foolish to antagonise her.
"Yeah. I am definitely not kissing Candice's feet. Not if you paid me!" You grin at her, which she slightly reluctantly returns.
"So, as I was saying before," she continues, apparently content to move on. "If you kissed my feet, really quickly, you wouldn't have to worry about Candice or anyone else. You'd only have to put your lips on them for like a second! We could even share the money if you want?"
Your ears prick up at that last part. "Share my money?" You ask her testily.
"Yeah - we could split it 50:50. It's obvious that you don't want to do this. I get it - kissing someone's feet - gross and all. If you do it right now, under my desk so no one else will even notice or interrupt us, I promise that I will give you half of the money."
"Jenny, can't you...you know, let me have...all of my money...?" You say hesitantly, not expecting to hear a positive reaction. Still it's worth a try.
She smiles at you. "I knew you'd ask me that. I know it's unfair you having to have your pay reduced. But if I'm really honest Rob, I could so do with that money. I'm behind on credit card payments, bills are mounting up...being a receptionist doesn't exactly pay well, you know."
"OK, true," you say reasonably. "But you're my friend....surely that means you wouldn't just... take my money...?"
She sighs. "That's the best I can do, Rob. I'm learning to be more ruthless - otherwise I'm going to spend my whole life being trampled on. This is a real opportunity for me; half of that money would make such a big difference. SUCH a big difference. Can you honestly say it would for you?"
Your friend has a point. She could really use the cash more than you actually need it. Still, there's this horrible feeling that you're being taken advantage of, by your ally, your confidant of all people. Despite all that, you feel a grudging respect building for her: she is not budging and her toughness and shrewdness about the situation has to be admired really.
"So there you have it: we'll settle at a 50-50 split if you kiss my feet right now. What do you say?" She looks at you hopefully while you mull it over... indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
