An Artificer’s Life for Phineas Fortescue

And report to Extraplanar Studies, so that you will be able to properly taken to your master in Exedo.

Upon finishing reading the message, Phineas would blink in confusion as he would slowly roll it back up. To most spheres of magic, Exedo was recognized as a Elemental Realm, one of 8 such realms, among the likes of those representing fire, water, earth, air, darkness, life, and light.

Exedo represented the Elemental Realm of Electricity however, and is a source of energy for many artificers, mages who were known for using magical artifacts much like machinery to cast spells. To be invited to Exedo usually meant being taken in by one of a few master artificers, but the note said that he would be directly taken, which he found as bizarre.

Heading off to Extraplanar Studies, Phineas would see one other student waiting by the door, a artificer he would recognize from Wrocklehurst Cellar by the name of Kaye Ferne. A rather scatterbrained girl, during her first year she ended up summoning a electrical elemental in her first attempt at summoning, and following a temporary bonding she has never been the same.

It certainly has given her a deep understanding of technology however, as she would be tinkering with what appeared to be a miniature oven on her hip. Using the excuse of needing calories to fuel her mind, her hips have slowly grown out, and she has even begun growing somewhat of a gut. She wasn’t fat by Phineas’ standards, but she was somewhat close.

Noticing Phineas, Kaye would quickly turn around and bow a bit, smiling. “Oh hey, nice to meet you! I assume your here for that apprenticeship in Exedo too?”

“Oh uh... yes...”

“Good!” Reaching to her wrist, Kaye would quickly press a button, causing the wrist to glow as she would rise up into the air a bit, levitating over Phineas. Upon realizing what was going on, she would blush a bit and deactivate the bracelet, before activating the other one, causing a flower to appear in her hand.

“Sorry, that other bracelet was for something else... either way, the name’s Kaye, nice to meet you!”

Raising his arm behind his hand in awkwardness, Phineas would sigh. “Uh about that... I think we already met last year. I think we were in the same Magical Artifact Studies class?”

“Oh, were we? I’m so sorry, I barely remember all those people in that class. I kinda had more focus on the cool gadgets rather than my classmates. But hey, if your here for Exedo, maybe we can get to know each other more!”

Giving him the rose, Phineas would watch Kaye wait excitedly for the current class to finish up, hopping up and down and letting her rump shake a bit, which would cause him to blush a bit from its bounce. Eventually though, the two would hear bells ring for the next class, and as swathes of students would exit out from the classroom, Phineas and Kaye would quickly head in.

In the classroom, the teacher would simply be drawing up a chalk sigil, sized for both of them, as he would beckon Phineas and Kaye forward. “Yeah, your those students Pa’ve wanted. Just step on the circle and we’ll have you over in Exedo.”

Quickly walking into the circle, Phineas and Kaye would push up together a bit so they could both fit, before Phineas would raise a hand, a bit worried. “Hey, we’re gonna be fine on the other end, right? We’re not going to be instantly electrocuted, right?”

“Eh you’ll be fine. As soon as your warped you’ll have a magical barrier surrounding you. That should protect you from all that high voltage.”

Snapping his fingers, the professor would activate the sigil, causing a skintight barrier to form around the two before causing them to be sent far away, in a beam of electrical light. After a bit, the two would land in what would appear to be some sort of cliff, overseeing an entire ocean made of plasma, as bolts of lightning would crush against the metallic ground.

Before the two could react however, a temple would quickly rise up from the plasma sea, as a electric elemental would walk out, taking a humanoid form. Looking as if to be made of a red crackling electricity itself, she would appear nearly 8 feet tall, but with a top heavy figure and with a somewhat rounded belly. She would be wearing some sort of white robes made out of rubber, and as she would reach out a hand, she would create a bridge between the cliff’s face and the rising temple out of a solid plasma.

“Ah, Phineas Fortescue and Kaye Ferne... Pleasure to meet you. My name is Pa’ve, High Artificer and member of the Council of Magic.”

Upon hearing the name a second time, Phineas would finally recognize her somewhat, being a member of the Council of Magic, a conjunction of some of the world’s greatest wizards, warlocks, and other spellcasters from all realms who were charged with writing and enforcing the laws of magic, and what would be considered legal and illegal in the world of magic.

“From here on I will be training you two personally in the arts of artifice, and you will learn every trick in the book from me. I am looking for a successor after all, to replace me when my time’s up for this world, and I’m hoping maybe I can find a group of people to take my spot rather than one person in particular.”

“Now, I wish to gather other artificers from the Citadel, but for now I’m stuck with you two... lesser magic users. Hopefully though I can get more by whipping you two into shape, so for your first assignment...”
