Chapter #9

a Mental Test on Paper

    by: rerti Author IconMail Icon
As Byleth's lecture seemed to drone on, Sylvain's mind found itself wandering. This time however, it didn't stem from boredom but rather self reflection. His flirty actions intentionally became a massive turn off for most women around him. His shallow, easygoing, womanizing behavior stems from the fear of vulnerability. If he played everyone, he himself couldn't get played. But its gone too far; he's now notorious for these acts, a fool who can't seem to take much seriously. This can't go on, he needs to make a change for himself. He needs to be who he wants to be, not what his crest or others dictates him to be. And with perfect timing, Sylvain ended his inner reflection just as Byleth had ended her lecture. Looking past the confinement of his flask prison, he cleared his throat before speaking up.

"I'm sorry professor, I've been childish. I know you have my best interest in mind so please help me out." Seeing him speak in a soft apologetic tone and bow, it was clear this apology was sincere.

Quirking her eyebrows ever so slightly, Byleth stood there a bit stunned. Just a few minutes ago, he was checking her out, and now he's uncharacteristically apologetic? He was being sincere too, in a way she's rarely ever seen. Maybe her 508th lecture finally broke through to him?

"Well, I'm glad you've come to your sense, and you should know that I'm never one to deny a student help." A smile broke through the professor's lips, if Sylvain was serious about this, she would support him all the way. She had to admit though, Seeing the self-made Casanova, shrunken, trapped, and humbled was a bit cute. Now what should she have him do?

Feeling the professor's eyes lock onto him, a shiver came over Sylvain. Sure the professor seemed to accepted his apology, but her face was never an easy one to read. As her gaze held steady, Sylvain felt himself shrinking down further. It really did feel like the professor and the flask were growing larger by the second. Neither could avert their gaze, and if this didn't stop soon, Sylvain worried he'd become microscopic.

It was only at the snap of Byleth's fingers that reality came back. With a perked up look in her eyes, Byleth wordlessly reached for the flask. Shaking Sylvain's surrounding as the flask rose, she wasted no time in flipping the glassy prison over her palm. Sent into a unexpected free fall, Sylvain let out a rather girly yelp before colliding with the professor's massive palm.

"Geez professor, would it kill ya to let a guy know beforehand?" Sylvain quickly set himself upright, rubbing the back of his head in pain.

"Well, when I see one I'll keep that in mind." Byleth wanted no part in Sylvain's banter, choosing instead to shut it down and set him down atop the desk. With his new attitude, Byleth was eager to see her student finally live up to his full potential.

Sylvain meanwhile was a bit floored, never in a million years would he have expected the professor to make a joke like that. She'd been getting more expressive over the past calendar year, but this caught him completely off guard. Still, if she was cracking jokes that had to mean she wasn't mad right?

"Just wait till Ingrid hears this!" A smile of disbelief appearing on his lips. His gaze then changed to the looming professor above, it seemed like she'd been waiting for his attention.

"Alright I've decided, we're going to review your upcoming certification exam. I've yet to see you even open a single book for it." an small, unamused look briefly took over her face before she continued. "Sit still for a second while I grab some supplies" She said, before quickly facing away from the desk and digging through one of many drawers.

"Studying huh?" Sylvain thought to himself. It wasn't the worst thing in the world? When he put his mind into it, the results could actually be pretty decent. He had to make a first step in cleaning his act though, and this step was as good as any! The young warrior continued to psyche himself up until a loud noise snapped him out of his gloating.

It was a loud repeating noise, like someone cutting through fabric? And it was right in front of Sylvain. With a red face and devious thoughts rushing in by the second, Sylvain was met with a massive backside. To be specific, it was the professor's giant bent over rear right in front of him. To be even more specific, it was the professor repeatedly scratching her giant, fabric covered, bent over, rear right in front of him. She must've forgotten about the shrunken student behind her!

How could he look away?! It was huge! And hot! and huge! "Man it's not everyday get this view!" He laughed to himself. "Man if the professor caught me though I'd be so dead...."

No, it was more than that. Sylvain didn't want to look away in fear of getting in trouble. A part of him wanted to look away because that was the right thing to do, and that part of him was getting louder. He shouldn't do this, he had just dedicated himself to being better. So forcibly snapping his eyes to the floor, Sylvain uttered the same word several times.

"Floor, floor, floor, floor, think about the floor...." He kept repeating to himself, hoping his face color would return before Byleth turned.

"Alright here we are..." Byleth said, turning around and placing all the supplies on the desk. "Sylvain why are you looking at the desk?" Noticing Sylvain's cranked head, she was more than curious about what he was doing.

"Just admiring the woodwork." he said nervously, knowing it didn't sound believable at all.

Luckily though, Byleth paid him no mind, instead choosing to focus on setting up and testing. Obviously she'd have to be the one to write all the answers. As amusing as it would be to watch Sylvain handle a quick taller than him, it would be a terrible use of time. Cracking a smile at the passing thought, she went onto explain the rules of the exam, talking as if she was a proctor.

Plucking the tiny student onto her shoulder, the practice exam began! Sylvain relaying the answers atop his giant professor's shoulder, and Byleth listening for and writing whatever the miniature squeaks said. After about an hour and 30 minutes of non-stop writing, it was time for Byleth to grade his attempt. After being set back on the desk, a nervous Sylvain could only watch as the professor marked his paper. He'd really put a lot of effort in, more than any previous test he could recall. It'd be a bit soul crushing to get the same mediocre grade he's been accustomed to!

After setting the quill back into the ink, the professor broke the long last silence. "A 96% percent, amazing work Sylvain. That's been your best performance all year!" Letting out a warm smile, Byleth couldn't help but let out a small applause. This is what she's been wanting for so long!

Sylvain couldn't hold back his smile, it felt good being praised by the Professor. He wasn't all talk, he could deliver! Being the person he wants to be, not hiding behind some character, that was the way to go! And hey who knows, this might bring his size back too!
