"You know, Mom really loves these types of games." Jenn replied taking another look at the box. "When she was growing up, she and her cousins would play Mystery Date for hours on end. They played it enough that her Grandma had to replace it several times since they played it so many times through the years that many of the pieces were either lost or worn down too much."
Looking at her, Josh could only blink in confusion. "So they played board games that much?" He asked confused.
Letting out a sigh, Jenn put the the game under her arm and gave him the look that she usually used when he said or did something stupid. "Well, you have to think too. Back when my Mom was younger she would visit her Grandma in Kansas during the summer. Since she lived out in the country, cable wasn't in the picture and they had to rely on an old antenna that was attached to the roof in order to watch anything." She explained as they made their way over to the car. "They didn't have video games to play. Only board and card games, the occasional VHS tape, and sitting outside watching the weather."
Following his girlfriend over to the car, Josh couldn't help but think about how boring it would be. "I would be bored out of my mind. What did she think of it?" He asked as they started to get inside.
"Well, she enjoyed it a lot, actually." Jenn replied back honestly. "When I was growing up, she would reflect back on her time on the farm rather fondly. In fact every time a storm rolls through, I can find her on the porch watching the clouds pass by and listening to the rain hitting the roof."
As they made their way over Jenn's, they continued to talk about what it must have been like without internet, video games, and cable television. When they reached Jenn's house, which was closer to the shop than they initially thought, they looked at each other with suprise. "I didn't think it was that close." Josh muttered under his breath looking over at Jenn. "Either we didn't pay attention while we drove here, which is kinda scary, or I don't know what to think." He sighed as he shook his head and started to get out to get out of the car.
"I heard about it." Jenn replied as she closed the door behind her. "Its call road hypnosis. You get too focused on driving and the scenary around you doesn't change much causing..." She started to explain before getting cut off by Josh shaking his head.
"Yeah, I don't need to be Jennsplained about it." He sighed as he waved his hand. "We probably got too caught up in the conversation that we we're paying too much attention to the drive." Josh surmised as they made their way up the walkway towards the front door.
Playfully poking Josh in the side, Jenn puffed out her cheeks in annoyance. "You know I hate it when you use that term." She told him causing Josh to chuckle a bit. OPening the front door, Jenn called out the the seemingly empty house. "We're home. Is anyone here?"
With the sound of chairs moving in the kitchen, they both heard Lynn calling back out to them. "We're in the kitchen doing some work." Making their way over to the kitchen, both of them soon found the table filled with papers and a couple of laptops. Lynn looked to be doing some case studies for an upcoming trial that she was having to do and Kira appeared to be sulking about having to do work herself. Like an otherworldly sense, Lynn could tell that her daughter wasn't doing what she needed to. "Young Lady." She scolded looking up from her paperwork. "You need to stop daydreaming and get your work done. The sooner you get it done, the faster you can do what you need to." She then brought her gaze over to Josh and Jenn and saw the box tucked under her daughter's arm. Sliding her glasses off putting them on the table, Lynn looked intrigued. "What is that you got there?" She asked starting to get up.
Knowing that she wasn't going to get too far way, Jenn pulled it out to show her. "We found this game over at the flea market and were wondering if you've heard of it?" She replied holding out the game to her Mom. "You keep on telling us about your summers at your Grandma's farm and we were wondering if you knew how much it might be worth."
Taking the box from her daughter's hands Lynn started to get a better look at the game. "I've never heard of this game, but I wonder if its anything like the Mystery Date game that I grew up with."
As she started to look it over some more, Lynn could feel an odd compulsion to play the game. 'PLAY THE GAME' She felt something say deep inside her head.
Looking around, she saw the kitchen table covered in paper. "Let's play in the Living Room." She replied, quickly making her way past them and into the Living Room. Much like a child with a new game, Lynn called out to the others. "Do you guys want to play too?" She asked, nearly yelling to get them to come play too.
"Can I play?" Kira asked trying to get out of writing her report.
Uncharacteristically, Lynn agreed. "Sure, more the merrier." She called back causing Kira to quickly abandon her work and join her Mom in the Living Room. "You two coming?" Lynn asked as she stuck her head around the corner to get their attention. "Well?"
