Chapter #5

Game of change - Going to Josh's

    by: Morphology Author IconMail Icon
"That Will is an asshole." Jenn grumbled as she looked over at Josh. "I want to blame you for them getting together, but I know how personable he can be when he wants something or get close to somebody." She was so mad that she banged her hand on her own leg causing her to yelp with pain. "Owe."

Glancing over while driving, Josh could see her rubbing her leg in a vain attempt to alleviate the pain. "Settle down slugger." He told her as he came to a stop at a red light. "Do you want to play the game over at Emily's?" Deep down inside, Josh wanted to play the game, but something was telling him that it was trouble.

Still rubbing her leg, Jenn looked back at Josh. "I don't know, we could head over to your house and play it, I wonder what your Mom would think about it. She likes old vintage games much like my Mom does." She replied thinking back to when their two families had a game night. The round of Yahtzee got kind of intense when Lynn accused Kim of cheating.

"I guess we can do that." Josh muttered loud enough for Jenn to hear. "But we will still need to head over to Emily's so we can see how she's doing. I mean, she seems a little attached to you." He pointed out since the two of them are always in contact with each other and never go a day without a text coming from the other. It was even more than he and Will talking to each other, let alone Jenn and himself. Deep down he wanted somebody that close to talk to and discuss everyday things.

Nodding her head, Jenn pushed up her glasses so that she could rub her eyes. "I know, she can be a little much sometimes but she's a great person deep down." Jenn rested her glasses back on her face. "If you want we can spend about 15 minutes there and then head over to your house, does that sound alright with you?" She asked looking back at him.

"That's fine." He told her as they made their way over to Emily's house.

Pulling up to Emily's house, they noticed Emily's car was the only one in the driveway and Jenn tucked the game under the passenger seat of Josh's car. As soon as they closed their doors, Emily came out of her house with her light makeup smeared from her recent crying. "Jenn, I'm sorry for making you and Josh come all the way back here." She leaned in to give Jenn a quick embrace.

Brushing it off as nothing, Jenn shook her head. "We were one the way over to Josh's house and it wasn't too far out of the way, right Josh?" She looked over at her boyfriend, who shook his head.

"What are you guys going to do over there?" Emily asked letting go and rubbing her tear stained eyes.

Not wanting to lie to her friend, Jenn let out a small sigh. "We found a new game that we were going to play and can't stay too long." She looked back over at Josh and gave him the look that screamed 'I'm Sorry'. "We were going to take it over to Josh's for an impromptu game night, since it's been a while since we've had one with his family." She replied as they made their way inside the house. "Oh, Josh." Jenn said turning her head to face him. "You don't have to stay here if you don't want to. I know how much you don't like to stay idle too long."

Waving his hand to swat down the idea, Josh shook his head. "Don't worry about it too much Jenn. Emily is a friend of mine too and don't want to put her out too much."

Smiling at how considerate he was being, Jenn sat on the sofa with Emily and rested her hand on Em's knee. "Tell me everything." Jenn requested wanting to help her friend. For the next half hour, Jenn and Emily talked about how destructive men can be in a relationship, their obliviousness to certain signs, and their love of sports outweighs the love of the woman in their lives. After every 5-10 minutes, either Jenn or Emily would look over at Josh and say. "Well, not you of course." Or "Present company not included of course" Or Josh's personal favorite "No offense." Looking at her watch, Jenn felt her eyes growing wider. "Geeze, its already almost 4?" She said aloud turning back to Emily. "We need to get going, but if there's anything you need just let me know alright?"

"Can I come with you two?" Emily asked feeling a little sheepish for the request. "I really don't want to be home tonight. Dad is pulling a double at the hospital and I just want somebody close that understands me."

Jenn turned to Josh, who reluctantly nodded his head. "It's fine Em." Josh told her with a caring smile. "Just don't let my Mom get under your skin while we play. She has a tendency to do that when she's playing." He told her as they started to get up. Turning back to Jenn. "Sweetie. Do you want Em to ride with us and I can drop you two back at the house when its all over with?" He turned back towards Emily. "I'm sorry, but I assumed that you and Jenn would want some time together without me here."

Emily shook her head as she replied. "Nah, its okay. I can drive myself over there and I'm a big girl so I can stay here by myself. Besides, I've already asked for too much asking you two to come here out of your way." It didn't take too long to lock down the house for the next couple hours and Emily followed Josh and Jenn over to his house.

As they parked and made their way inside, Josh called out. "Mom, I'm home and I brought some guests." Making their way into the living room, Josh saw his Mom and sisters watching some corny romantic movie where everything seems too good to be true. "Oh, this is Emily and we..." He gestured between himself and Jenn. "invited her over to play a board game. Did any of you want to play with us?" He asked, but was surprised by the answer that he got.
