Prom Night Game - Opening the box

    by: Morphology Author IconMail Icon
Shrugging his shoulders, Josh grabbed the box from Jenn and started to open the box to see what his girlfriend had purchased from that odd shop. "Wait." Jenn cried out to him, trying to grab the box back, but found it too far out of her reach. Seeing that he was treating her like she was his sister, Jenn put her hands on her hips and tried to speak some reason into him. "Don't you find it weird that we walked in, she popped out of nowhere to help us?" She asked.

Thinking about it for a moment, Josh shook his head. "She was in another aisle and we didn't see her when we walked in." He surmised as he stared to bring down the box.

Seeing this as a possibility, Jenn thought of something else. "Well then, what about the monocle that she used to find what we were looking for?" She asked, determined that this didn't make any sense, at least to her.

Brushing it off as nothing, Josh started to pull off the tape that was on the top of the box. "Jenn, sweetie." He started as he looked at her. "We're college students and she probably had many other students like us looking for vintage games to play too."

She looked at him with a bewildered look. 'When did he start thinking so sensibly?' She thought to herself as she watched in disbelief as he started to pull off the tape that was holding the flaps of the box together. "Wait." Jenn tried to call out, but soon found the box open and Josh looking into the box.

"What the hell is this?" He asked looking into the box and back over to Jenn, who felt an odd compulsion of glancing into the box to see what was inside. As she was about to get close, Josh started to pull out the contents. "I've never heard of this game before." He replied as he turned the game over so that Jenn would be able to see it.

Looking at the game, Jenn started to read the box. "Pretty Prom Reveal. Will you have what it takes to become Prom Queen?" She read aloud as she looked at the picture on the box. It showed a pretty girl walking down the stairs with the Dad and Mom watching her. The girl, who had her blonde hair in a beautiful updo, was using her gloved hands to guide herself down the stairs in their light green dress that looked to have come out of a fashion magazine of the time. The father, was facing towards his daughter and looked to have a pipe hanging out the side of his mouth and an old fashioned camera pointing at her to keep the moment fresh in the minds for years to come. The mother, looked to be dressed in a house coat, her head resting her head on the husband's shoulder, and her well kept, manicured hand draped around the back of his neck in a loving embrace, as if to take in the moment. Taking the box from her boyfriend's hands, Jenn took a better look at it. "Wow, this looks mint condition." She mentioned with a gleam seemingly coming from her eyes.

"I wonder how much we can get from it?" Josh wondered trying to get a better look at the box. "What's the copyright date on the back?" He asked again while trying to grab the box from her grasp.

Sensing that her purchase was in danger, Jenn held it close to her chest and turned away from him to protect the box. "Not so fast, I'm the one that bought it."

Seeing his girlfriend turn away from him while trying to protect something from him, Josh instantly changed his mood. "Sorry, I didn't mean to..." He stopped and started thinking back at when he was younger and the fights that his Mom and Dad would have. Thankfully it wasn't anything that the kids did, but rather the late nights his 'Sperm Donor' spent at the office with his secretary. It was only a matter of time until his Mom found out and when she did, it was like Krakatoa erupting. Small and unassuming at first, but deafening for the world around him. That was the last time his Dad was allowed back in the house without a police escort, the last time his Mom was able to not have to worry about money for a while, and the last time that he was able to live a somewhat carefree life.

Feeling the madness starting to fade from her boyfriend, Jenn turned back around with the board game still within her arms. "Its alright." She told him looking up through her eye lashes, causing Josh's heart to skip a beat.

Looking back down at the game in her hands, Jenn felt something coming from the box that she was holding. 'PLAY' Blinking for a moment to make sure she wasn't going insane, Jenn continued to look at the game in her hands and felt it again. 'PLAY THE GAME'

"Jenn, are you alright?" Josh asked, concerned.

Shaking her head slightly to try and free it from the compulsion of the game, Jenn looked back up at Josh. "Sorry." She apologized, bringing the game back down to her side. "I'm fine. How about we go over to my house and try this game out?"
