You sat on your bed, pondering what to do, when your thoughts suddenly shifted to your mom. "Mom will take some time to come back from grocery shopping. If I had to guess, she'd probably start preparing dinner for us right away." You lay down and began to stare at the ceiling. Even though you didn't want to waste time doing nothing, it felt kind of nice to just relax. The fact that school would start again in a few days made it even better to take a break and just focus on yourself.
After a while of simply lying on the bed, you decided to do something for real this time. You looked around and thought that maybe playing some games would be nice. With that, you got up and turned on your console, where you were greeted by the all-too-familiar home menu. You didn’t really feel motivated to play something fast-paced and action-packed right now. Opening your game library, you noticed, for the first time, how many games you had and had never really played. With your current mood, your eyes fell on the RPGs. You looked through them, but nothing really caught your eye - until you saw a particular game that you didn’t remember buying. You didn’t know why, but somehow, you felt compelled to start it, even though you weren't really the biggest fan of JRPGs.
The moment it booted up the menu, you started a new game. It seemed to be a game where the main character was not a young man or boy, but a mother on a mission to rescue her family from the evil Lord. Your first instinct was to close the game, but something about it intrigued you, and you wondered where it would go. "I think there aren't that many games with such a main character. Who cares? Let's see where this is going," you said to yourself.
It had a quite interesting gameplay loop. First, you had to gather a party, level up by fighting monsters, and follow the typical JRPG-like story. The twist was that every evil commander you defeated allowed you to rescue one of your family members, which also added a gameplay element where you had to take care of them, just like a mother would. The first rescue was easy, mostly because it was part of the tutorial to showcase the mechanic. Watching her take care of these tasks on her first rescued family member - what seemed to be her youngest daughter - was strangely satisfying. But wanting to do it yourself was something you could never really imagine. You told yourself in a jokingly manner about that this could happily stay in the game.
You played for some time until you heard from below that your mom was back from grocery shopping. At that moment, you realized how long you had been playing. It had been at least two hours straight, and you had only rescued one family member. You thought to yourself that it was normal for JRPGs to take a long time.
You laid down your controller and did a good stretch while thinking to yourself, "I must admit, this game kinda is fun. I never thought such an MC would make me like JRPGs." This made you laugh a bit to yourself, and you thought about what to do next.
