I take my inspiration from Nature; sights, sounds, smells and texture. Although they are not my favorite birds, I seem to write a lot of poems about geese. Most likely because of a book of poems I bought when I was in the fifth grade, which included "Something Told the Wild Geese", by Rachel Field. It became my favorite, and still is today.
