I look for a good hook at the beginning and like stories that "hit the ground running". Good plots with a theme, strong characters with an emotional impact, moving dialogue, sensory descriptions, clear communication and words with a purpose are strong points of a good story.
I'm good at...
knowing a good story when I read one. I like to read as much as I like to write, maybe more. I will let you know when a sentence just does not make sense to me, and I will try to give you my opinion on how to make it better.

Hello,

I found your short story on the read and review page, and I guess it's true. You never know what you're getting when you buy a used car, vehicle Jeb called it.

I do think Sam traded up...oh that was terrible pun.

Thanks for sharing this cute story and keep on writing.

Hello,

I found your story on the read and review page and it had me laughing in no time. I was even beginning to think the author was really thirteen, you make it sound so real. (It's not real, is it?)

The conversation between mom and daughter about why she had married the man was hilarious and yet it had that essence of truth which truly makes something funny.

Thanks so very much for sharing your writing and I'll be looking for more.

Hello Hooves,

Yes, animals seem so much more contented than humans at least if they're left to their own devices. I like that second stanza and think you may be hinting that tongues of humans are what make life difficult sometimes.

I love your poem and I'm going to read it to Mopsy, who will love it too. Thanks for sharing and good luck with the Cramp.

Hello,

I am so sorry for your loss. I have a lump in my throat and overflowing eyes reading your words. I have a kitty and know that the same time will come for me, too.

Your girl was extra lucky to have such a loving family, and I know that nothing but happy memories can make this time any easier. Love to you and yours. Thanks for sharing these difficult words.

Hello,

I found your short story on the read and review page and your title drew me into the story.

It reminded me of the times I have felt guilty about saying or doing things without thinking first. It is amazing how the mind can play tricks on us when we feel that way, tricks that eventually propel us to do the right thing.

I'm glad you were able to say sorry to your grandma before she died.

Thanks for sharing your story.

Review of The Wallet

Hi Carly,

I found your short story on the read and review page, and the title piqued my interest.

I thought at first that Daisy was going to keep the wallet, she seemed so interested in the amount of cash, but the driver's license photo changed her mind. So, I not sure about the status of her nature, a little good, a little taking advantage of an opportunity.

Anyway it looks like she made the right decision on all counts. Thanks for sharing and keep writing.

Review of My Kitty Bella

Hi Megan,

I found this story on the read and review page and as a cat lover (and servant) I had to read it. I guess Bella is a lot more grown up by now and hopefully, more calmed down. I remember when my Mopsy was like that but at fifteen, she's just a sleepyhead now.

I'm so sorry about your Tigger, but I'm happy for all your photos and good memories. Thanks for sharing this.

Review of My Dearest Son

Hi Jace,

I found your short story on the read and review page and I like the format, beginning with a letter from a father to a son. Of course, It's a sad story and you have shown that sadness through the senses.

Using the vehicle of the mother's funeral to tell Tighe's story is another good idea. And ending with a letter from Tighe to his as yet unborn son wrapped up everything.

Thanks for sharing. I hope you won the contest and I'm looking forward to reading more of your writing.

Hello,

I found your short story on the read and review page, and enjoyed your new method of thwarting a bully. Of course, it couldn't have happened without Nick. He was a very good friend. So if someone should think one person cannot make a difference, your story tells them differently.

I enjoyed the read of a well-proofed story. Thanks for sharing.

Review of Late

Hello,

Wow, now that's ironic! I found your story on the read and review page, and your first sentence pulled me in. Your ending was very much a surprise, but down deep I knew something bad was going to happen to Barry when things started going so well.

I like your writing style, moving from one thing to another quickly and seamlessly, all believable. I really feel sorry for Barry. After he finally got his act together, boom.

Thanks for sharing your writing and keep doing it.

Hello,

I found your short story on the read and review page, and I enjoyed reading your tale of a good friend. I was happy to see that Bonnie did not forget her friend, who was ill and unable to play outside with the others. Even though Bonnie continued to play, she let Annika know she was thinking of her, and that was very important to Annika.

Your writing is straight forward, clear and concise. You don't waste the reader's time with frivolous words, and I like that.

Thanks for sharing this good-hearted story and keep writing.

Review of Coffee Time
Rated: E | (4.0)
Hello Giecca,

I came upon your morning scene on the read and review page, a scene as told through the mind of a person first coming awake in the morning. Each thought is encouraging the body to waken and yet it always rebels, other thoughts intersecting with the waking process, slowing it down.

But as for many others, the real waker-upper is that first cup of coffee and as it is being drunk, a new scene is envisioned similar to that in movie Rear Window, watching a neighbor across the way doing the same thing.

This scene has so many possibilities. I hope you continue on with it. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Fyn,

I found your story on the read and review page and I never can pass by one written by you. What an idea, writing only to help other people, a goal to lust after, yes.

Your story is well-written and the message is hidden in the tale but not to go unnoticed. I wonder who that little girl might be?

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Neva,

I found your short story on the read and review page, and it is an inspiring one, taking a near tragic experience and turning it into an extremely positive memory. We are so lucky your grandfather found you.

It reminds me of that old saying of "turning lemons into lemonade", and I find there is a lot of truth in it if you can do it. You have proven it.

Thanks for sharing your childhood story and for the thoughtful writing.

Hello Carmela,

I found your essay on the read and review page and as I read, several thoughts ran through my mind. Of course, the most prominent was the death of my husband almost six years ago.

I don't think reactions remain static, at least mine didn't. I went through many and still find myself at time reacting differently than I really feel at this point in my life, triggered by some tiny memory.

Your article has given me much to think about. It is well-written and shows the writer's life to be a good one. May you continue on your path and continue to share your writing.

Hello,

I found your magical story on the read and review page. So...just any old person can make a magic wand? No need to be a sorceress or a witch? Do I need gemstones? What? Just an old branch from my backyard?

Okay, you've put the magic into me and I'm ready to make this wand. I even have some runes from which I can burn a message into the wood. And rainbow colors of bright paint.

All kidding aside you have written the ultimate how-to. Thanks for sharing your magic with this muggle.

Review of Adoption Papers
Rated: 18+ | (4.0)
Hello,

I found your short story on the read and review page. This is a very strange family and the kicker is...the one who wants to be adopted by a normal family has three arms, a little irony added in.

I read your story easily and quickly and noticed no spots that threw me out of the tale. Your dialogue is good and moves the plot along, but, wow, some of your characters are, shall we say, unbelievable. But I guess that's the point.

I hope you did well with the Cramp entry and thanks for sharing.

Review of Wheat

Hello,

I found your poem on the read and review page. This is a lovely haiku, perfect in syllabic count and reference to nature. It presents an image of a wheat field like the ones I knew growing up in the farmlands of Delaware.

I've been writing some haiku for poetry month and they are like potato chips, betcha can't write just one. I love them. Thanks for sharing.

Hello,

I found your essay on the read and review page. You have succeeded in showing the importance of preparation especially to a team effort. Although you say it took some time for you to realize the error of your ways, unfortunately, some people never realize this fact always blaming their inadequacy on something or someone else.

Your article is well-written and in my opinion publishable when you find the right outlet. Thanks for sharing and keep writing.

Review of SHARING

Hi Joy,

I found your short story on the read and review page. It took me back to my first days in school, so scary.

I love the way Amanda and Francine are getting to be friends, each trying to help the other with something. And the ending is perfect, sharing Amanda's mommy because Francine only has a daddy.

Thanks for sharing this cute and well-written story.

Review of Running Scared

Hi Jeannie,

I found your story on the read and review page. You succeeded in making me feel scared for the girls. I thought something terrible was going to happen to them. Your dialogue is very natural and moved the plot along nicely. I found it somewhat hard to believe that they went into the unknown cave so willingly. I would have stayed in the nice safe warm car. I'm happy nothing bad (except for being scared) happened to them and they were rescued by some kind neighbors.

Thanks for sharing your story.

Review of Our story

Hello,

I found your short story on the read and review page. There must have been word restrictions involved so I will not say anything about giving the reader more information. Only if you later expand this story, it would be much more interesting.

This sounds like the perfect life of a couple in love who got to sail the world and settle on the island of their dreams. But all things eventually end and this ended sadly with no explanation given.

Thanks for sharing this much with your audience.

Review of First Flight

Hello,

I found your short story on the read and review page. I could relate to this tale since I have never flown in my entire life...yet. You gave me quite a scare and then quite a laugh with the two mishaps. Your dialogue is great and shows so much more than telling.

Congrats on the Flash win and thanks for sharing your creativity.

Review of Dad's Messy Hands

Hello Jatog,

I found your poem on the read and review page and liked the title and the photo.

Poor Dad, he certainly got into his work, but hey, that's what makes a good cook, right? And so much fun for the kids.

I love the poem, so easy to read, good rhyme and rhythm, the last stanza is my favorite. Great job incorporating all those words into it, and congrats on the Cramp win!

Hi Neva,

I found your short story on the read and review page and the comedy genre was just what I needed this morning.

Poor Harvey, trying to do a good deed, but everything has gone downhill including Lora's patience. This sounds like something my husband might have done except that he never cooked a thing in his life. Um maybe chicken noodle soup from the can.

And the poor pets. Thankfully, Lora calmed down and rectified everything.

Cute story and it gave me a few laughs. Thanks for sharing.
