I look for a good hook at the beginning and like stories that "hit the ground running". Good plots with a theme, strong characters with an emotional impact, moving dialogue, sensory descriptions, clear communication and words with a purpose are strong points of a good story.
I'm good at...
knowing a good story when I read one. I like to read as much as I like to write, maybe more. I will let you know when a sentence just does not make sense to me, and I will try to give you my opinion on how to make it better.

Review of Sleep
Rated: E | (4.0)
Hi Meduf,

I found your story on the read and review and since I have not been sleeping well, I wondered if I might find some pearls of wisdom to help.

It sounds like you have had a really sleepless week but the thoughts of a weekend on a sailboat should be just what the doctor ordered, sorry for the cliche. Since I love the water, I can imagine the natural sleeping pill of the rolling waves and the rocking sailboat. Hope it did the trick.

Thanks for sharing and keep writing.

Review of The Mural
Rated: E | (4.0)
Hi Jacky,

I found your short story on the read and review page and the title intrigued me so I started to read.

I can relate to this because I have gotten roped into painting murals too, not on school walls though. This is so nice that it turned out her daughter enrolled in this one...and whispered in her ear before she began to paint, ghostly foreshadowing of the future.

This is a cute story and I enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Amelia,

I found your story on the read and review page and I'm cold just reading it. It's hard to imagine that much snow but you do a good job of describing it and its impact on the people inside. It reminds me of living through a hurricane (several for me).

I couldn't help but think that the narrator had to be a physician, a little more info on that would be helpful and add credibility to the story. Also, I would like to know the place or general area of the story so that I could relate to it more.

I enjoyed reading it and hope you will be adding to it. Be sure and let me know. Thanks for sharing.

Review of Messy Room
Rated: E | (4.0)
Hi Abby Gayle,

I found your short story on the read and review page. I'm certainly happy that I don't have one the those under the bed monsters! Cleaning is a big enough job without one.

I followed your dialogue easily and it did a good job of moving along the plot. Kids should love this story for verification purposes. Yes, I think I may have blamed a few messes on monsters during my childhood.

Thanks for sharing and keep writing.

Review of Shimmy and Roscoe
Rated: E | (4.0)
Hi Adore,

I found your short story on the read and review page and I had to read about someone named Shimmy. I thing Roscoe is aware from the beginning that this walk is different. Knowing that, you set the mood to be on guard.

I never had a dog, only kitties, but I can relate with Shimmy, not a fun job, especially on a dark, windy night. The one-sided dialogue sounded very normal since I do that with my cat all the time. I wonder what mysteriously made them race for home? Left for the reader's imagination.

Cute story, thanks for sharing.

Hi Angel,

I found your vacation story on the read and review page. I'm sorry you have allergies and could not enjoy the sun on a sun-bathing island, but at least you had some good books to read. It sounds like a beautiful place...but don't a lot of our hurricanes begin there, or am I thinking of somewhere else?

I enjoyed reading about your trip, but maybe next time you will go to a cooler and cloudy spot. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Sandra Lynn,

I found your poem on the read and review. I love this ode to your grandmom who was turning 80 when you wrote it. You have gotten a good deal of information into 44 lines, lines that are musical with the love shining through. I can tell this grandmom was special to you.

Thanks for sharing yours and your grandmom's story and please keep on writing.

Review of Brains over Brawn
Rated: E | (4.5)
Hi Jacky,

I found you on the read and review and had no idea who (what) was telling this story until the end. Nice surprise. I was already picturing ragamuffins in a Dickens tale to be the culprits.

I like stories full of dialogue that moves the plot along and yours did, very naturally. I promise I won't tell your protagonists' secrets.

Thanks for sharing and keep writing.

Hi Kenzie,

I sure hope she bakes sweet rolls for you. What a wonderful thought. I found you on the read and review and love to read about grandmoms. I would like to have known yours. When people around you are positive, it's very difficult not to be positive yourself.

Thanks for sharing this tribute to your grandmom and I'm certain she is looking down and smiling right now!

Review of Pictures
Rated: E | (4.5)
Hi Jacky,

I found you on the read and review. Talk about being in the right place at the right time! Jared had his four leaf clover and his rabbit's foot this day. And Mr. Banks read a thousand words into that picture.

This is a good story, told well, with the punch at the end. Thanks for sharing.

Review of The Candy Store

Hi Shaara,

I found you on the read and review. This is a dream come true story. The only thing better (for me) would be a book store with 25 cent books. But I think it was Swen who did the real selling, selling himself that is. Who could pass up a guy as giving and happy as that.

It's a cute story and I enjoyed reading every word. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Carol St. Ann,

What a wonderful memory, and you have recorded it for posterity. I can imagine your sharing this with children, grandchildren or friends and how in awe some would be and how reminiscent others would feel. As many others do, I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing at the announcement of his assassination. It makes us a part of that history.

I couldn't help but compare his speech to our present-day situation. We had come far but now we are regressing. Perhaps there is a reason, but it's hard to fathom why.

Thanks for sharing your experience and I would hope many others will read it.

Review of An Act Unobserved
Rated: 13+ | (4.0)
Hello Leonard Soie,

I found your entry on the Cramp, thought the prompt interesting and so began to read.

I was happy that Andy was able to retrieve the ring for the old man. The story kept my interest with good descriptions and engaging dialogue. One question. Why is Andy wearing a blue Superman t-shirt underneath his coat? Does this somehow help him with his quest to hook the ring? If it has no meaning for the story, you should leave it out. It is misleading. Or you could use it to add another facet to your tale.

Good luck with the Cramp and thanks for sharing.

Review of Ghosium
Rated: E | (4.5)
Hi Elenawrites,

I enjoyed your story of a nephew and niece sent off to spend the summer with their chemist aunt. It has good flow and the children's adventures (or misadventures) kept me reading until the end.

I think you could write a lot more about the Underground Railroad ghosts and the protective talking cat, some pretty interesting characters in the making. And I like your title, Ghosium...pronounced go see um?

Thanks for sharing.

Review of The Old Veteran

Hello Sum 1,

I found your poem on the read and review. It's sad that many veterans are in this same position, especially in VA Hospitals, no visitors and no one to remember their heroic efforts or share their stories.

I'm happy you wrote this moving poem to remind people of those who fought for our freedom. It takes very little to make someone happy, a kind word, an inexpensive gift, some of our time. We all need to be more aware and your poem sends that message. Thank you for sharing it.

Hi Scarlett,

I found you on the read and review. Wow, you should write for stand-up comedy, some great lines here.

Poor Alicia, but at least it didn't take long for her to make up her mind. Or is Jen trying to eliminate the competition. Hard to say, but too funny.

Thanks for sharing the laughter.

Review of A day to remember
Rated: E | (4.0)
Hello,

I found you on the read and review and was drawn into your story by your title.

Eamon Moore's ghostly self has returned to the place of his demise, a place where he intended to ask for his beloved's hand in marriage. For some reason he is doomed to repeat the process many times. What he sees does not make him happy.

This is an interesting story with an unusual narrator. I found it written well. Unless you were under a word restriction, much more could be added to the story, but I will leave that to you.

Thanks for sharing.

Review of The view
Rated: 13+ | (4.0)
Hi R J,

I found you on the read and review. This was an interesting and emotional story told from an unusual point of view. I have to admit, after I read a couple lines, I went to the end and found out the identity of the narrator.

You have put into words something that is playing out in real life so many times, so very sad. I hope you are not writing from personal experience but from research.

Your short story needs a good edit for spelling and punctuation errors, but the content kept me reading. Thanks for sharing this and welcome to writing.com.

Hi Suezz,

I found you on the read and review, good story. You did a great job of showing, not telling, especially at the beginning of the story.

Dialogue was good and the "secret" was well-kept until the end.

The only thing I had trouble believing was how willingly Prissy got into the trunk.

Thanks for sharing and write some more.

Hi Scarlett,

I found this on the read and review and with such an interesting title, I began to read.

Thanks for sharing some things about the early part of your marriage. I think your David and my Jim may have had some personality traits in common. And yes, unfortunately, some traits are impossible to change.

Sad that Paul's granddad passed away with him so young. I love the photo.

I can't imagine being a substitute teacher, on call everyday. I'm really glad I found this and know a little more about you. Thanks so much for sharing.

Review of Library Use Only
Rated: 13+ | (4.0)
Hi Sam N. Yago,

I found you on the read and review and your title pulled me in.

Apparently Myra has found a time-traveling book which may have been better left in the library although it seems to have brought her back without her consent.

Sneaking a book out of our library is almost impossible as alarms go off. It has happened to me by mistake.

I would liked to have known why she wanted the book so much that she would take it out of the library illegally. Fortunately, nothing bad happened to her.

Thanks for sharing this short story.

Hi Jacky,

I found you on the read and review and fell for the title. Yes, life does go round and round. It's always wonderful when something good happens to pick one up out of that rut of despair. I think many of us have been there, done that.

You tell and show the theme of your story very well. Thanks for sharing and thank heavens for those "surprises" of day-to-day life.

Review of Flies
Rated: 13+ | (4.5)
Good Morning,

I found you on the read and review. This is a powerful story with some semblance of Poe, the horror of it. The mother has gone insane upon the loss of her husband (maybe), and driven to the brink by invisible flies, she finishes off her entire family with a gas explosion. That's my take, not too sure of the accuracy.

This is very well-written, a few tiny punctuation errors was all I could find wrong. I like being in the imaginative state when I am reading. Thanks for sharing this.

Hi Neva,

I'm just like the narrator of this story, don't spend money needlessly. However...I know my limits and using a chain saw would not be within those limits.

I'm not sure I would care for a green cement lawn. I think I would cover the entire yard with mulch (you can get colored but I don't care for it), much cheaper than cement, and then plant a few drought-resistant shrubs. Then the pine tree could remain.

I liked your ending. I hope the judge found in the narrator's favor. Thanks for sharing and congrats on your win.

Hello percy goodfellow,

I found you on the read and review. You have an interesting opinion on the existence of alien intelligent life. I agree that there must be other life out there but intelligent as we define the word? I'm not sure about that. And you have not given me any information that would prove otherwise.

Your essay is well-written and thought-provoking, but I would need lots more proof to believe.
