It's Opinion Thursday! The November 28, 2013 prompt for "30-Day Blogging Challenge ON HIATUS" ![]() Thanksgiving. Do you live in the US and celebrate it? What does it represent to you today versus what it might have represented in the Holiday's infancy? Do you live outside the US and don't care about Thanksgiving is? Give us your thoughts. On Thanksgiving Day people in the U.S.A. count their blessing, pray or say "Thank you for..." When I was growing up, Thanksgiving Day was for family getting together, saying grace, eating a turkey, watching television, or going outside to play. Thanksgiving was a time of gratitude, sharing your blessing with the less fortunate (even if those less fortunate were only family members), stuffing yourself with turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, potatoes (at least two kinds and one kind with gravy), salad (at least three kinds), and pie (at least two or three kinds). Thanksgiving Day was for tradition and, for me, it is still a time for practicing tradition (even though some of those traditions have changed over the years and for gratitude. On this Thanksgiving Day I am alone for the first time in 66 years, but I still practice one of the traditions Mom and I began a few years ago. I am not sure when Mom and I began the tradition of eating pumpkin pie with whipped cream, or its equivalent, for breakfast while watching the morning news. This morning, I warmed over some coffee in the microwave and cut myself a piece of pumpkin pie. I put a whipped cream equivalent on it (probably too much) and then I took my food into the living room, turned on the television, and watched the morning news. I did not expect to do this today, but I am glad I did because I saw President Obama pardoning Popcorn (the national Thanksgiving turkey) and commanders in Afghanistan serving the troops Thanksgiving dinner. It is nice to know, that despite the sacrilege of stores beginning their Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving Day, tradition is still alive and practiced in the United Sates of America. I am staying home today, I am not going to attend pre-Black Friday sales. There are a few things I did not get when I went shopping yesterday, I will wait until tomorrow to purchase them. I know that my single protest will do nothing to stop stores from starting their Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving Day, but they can damn well do it without my help and approval. On Thanksgiving Day we are supposed to be grateful for what we have instead of trampling other human beings to increase a merchants bottom line. Quote of the Day: "Black Friday: Because only in America, people trample others for sales exactly one day after being thankful for what they already have." - Unknown |
It's War Chest Wednesday! The November 27, 2013 prompt for "30-Day Blogging Challenge ON HIATUS" ![]() There's something you want very badly but can't have it. Your only way of obtaining it is to sacrifice something else of true importance. What do you want and what would you give up to get it? What do I want but can't have? An interesting question, which I find difficult to answer at this time in my life. I don't know what I would want so badly that I'd sacrifice something else for, any more then I know what I'd sacrifice. I've been required to make a lot of sacrifices in my 66 years, eleven months, and two days on this planet. I've usually never considered the sacrifice until after it was made. That could mean that the thing or things I sacrificed weren't important enough to remember or consider a sacrifice. It could also mean that what what I received for the sacrifice was more important then the things sacrificed. After the age of 27, I realized that sometimes the sacrifice is more important then the item or items sacrificed. I think that had to do with giving my daughter up for adoption. I knew I could not take care of her and I knew my living arrangements were not the type that would encourage her talents and living a fruitful life. After that sacrifice, all other sacrificed paled in comparison. The other sacrifice I made was getting out of the workforce to care for Mama. At the time, I didn't consider the financial burden it would place on me after Mom's death, which was probably the most important thing I sacrificed to become a caregiver. I'm still struggling with that sacrifice because I'm not financially independent and I need to rely on other people to help me financially. The house closes next week and I don't have a place to live; I may have to go to Searchlight to live with my sister, which means I may have to give up my Cox Communications internet connection for a while. I don't know how I'll be able to live without a reliable internet connection because the only connection I may have is through a satellite dish, which I don't trust because of the sunspot cycle we are experiencing. I could be concerned over nothing, because one of the waiting list I'm on may clear so that I can get a place here in Las Vegas. Living in Searchlight would be a sacrifice because I have to come into Las Vegas or go to Boulder City to shop and pick up my prescriptions. If I have to go to the hospital or an urgent care facility then I have to come into Las Vegas. When I see my doctor or any doctor, I have to come into Las Vegas. Then there is the $200.00 I have to pay to get out of the bundle I have for my internet, phone, and television. The land-line and the television are not big deals, but I would miss the reliability of the cable modem. What do I want that I can't have? I may be able to answer this question better next week. What would I sacrifice for what I want but can't have? This is another question I can probably answer better next week. Food for Thought about Sacrifice: “Seven Deadly Sins Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice.” ― Mahatma Gandhi |
}It's War Chest Tuesday! The November 26, 2013 prompt for "30-Day Blogging Challenge ON HIATUS" ![]() Have you ever risked your life to save the life of someone else? Would you if the situation arose? Who would you risk your life for? (If you would prefer to answer a slightly tamer version of this question, replace the word "life" with reputation.) Have I ever risked my life to save the life of someone else? No. Would I, if the situation arose, risk my life to save someone else? I would like to say yes, to this question, but the truth is I have absolutely no idea how I would respond in a case like that. Would I risk life and limb for another human being? I hope the answer would be a resounding YES. The prompt for "Blogging Circle of Friends Prompt Forum" ![]() Apparently, there is a National Day for just about anything. Today, November 26th is National Cake Day! If you had to represent us in a world bake off, what cake would you bake to best describe us and why? Bet some of you are going to immediately say "fruitcake" ![]() I have made many cakes in my life. I have baked cakes in conventional ovens and I have bake them in microwaves. I have make cakes from scratch and I have used mixes. I have made chocolate cakes, I have made mayonnaise cakes, I have made all sorts of cakes, but I have never made a fruitcake (all though I've dated a few). If I were going to bake a cake for National Cake Day, I would like to bake a fruitcake simply because it would be a new experience. However, I would not bake the conventional fruitcake because I would not bake it from scratch. The way I would make a fruitcake is to start with the pound cake mix I have in the refrigerator and the can of mixed fruit I have sitting on the breakfast counter. I would mix the cake according to the directions on the box, except I would substitute some of the liquid in the mixed fruit for the liquid ingredients the cake mix direction calls for. After mixing the cake, I would put the cake in a casserole dish and put it in the microwave for about ten minutes. Then I would see if the cake was done clear through by sticking a butter knife in the middle. If the cake was not baked through then I would put it through the bake cycle for a few more minutes or seconds. |
It's Wildcard Monday! The November 25, 2013 prompt for "30-Day Blogging Challenge ON HIATUS" ![]() What is your first reaction when you forget something? Take us through your initial terror and following thoughts. Anecdotes are helpful! Forgetting something used to scare the shit out of me, but lately I have other things to worry about. There was a time when I thought the problem was an indication of Alzheimer's disease; however, I now realize it is a part of stress. I am dealing with the stress and the forgetfulness (not necessarily in that order). Panic does not help may memory, in fact it just makes the momentary issue of C.R.S.1 worse. The best thing to do is just calm down (it that is possible) and go through the steps of where I last saw the item I forgot. A To Do List helps, provided I remembered or took the time to print the list out the night before. Prayer, placing the situation in God's hands, and writing helps. A good To Do List has A, B, and C, with the C priorities being those that it doesn't matter if I forget because I can do those either once a week or once a month and after I complete the A and B priorities. Another thing that helps with forgetfulness is the desire to do something that you have to do; just because I have to do something does not always mean I want to do it. I have to find the motivation to do things I do not want to do, but have to do in a given situation. Lately, I have found that fear, which is a part of stress, interferes with memory. I know that I have calm down, take a deep breath, and confront the elephant in the room. For some reason I cannot seem to focus on what I need to accomplish, but rather I want to focus on the fear and the only thing that does is encourage forgetfulness and stress. I took care of one problems this morning, I called my realtor and he told me the house will close the first part of next week, but not before. This gives me a bit of time and a deadline, which I need because for some reason I cannot seem to function if I do not have a deadline. True, sometimes I wave at it as it passes, but at least it helps me to function when I work within it. Today, I almost forgot to post my goals on "Weekly Goals" ![]() 1. Add a minimum of 1,667 words each day to my NaNoWriMo novel "Midnight in Suburbia" ![]() 2. Review a minimum of 3 items on writing.com each day. 3. I do not know how that could have slipped my mind, but it did. I am now wondering what else I might have forgotten. It's Creation Saturday! The November 23, 2013 prompt for for "30-Day Blogging Challenge ON HIATUS" ![]() Write about your greatest fear from the point of view of your fear. 1 On Creation Saturday, what fears may come rising out of the depths of memory, of imagination, of fantasy to curtail story, stop a poem, or cut short a blog entry? Is writer's block a fear slipping into an author's mind, as a result of too much sleep, lack of sleep, a drunken binge, an orgy of eating, or a period starvation and thirst. 2 Writer's Block: I am your worst fear, rising out of the ocean of your negative self-talk. I am the blank page terror whispering... "I can't write!" "I don't know what to say!" "I don't have any new ideas!" ...to your worried mind. I am the ego's fear of failure, I am the terror of success, repeating clichés, rewriting in mid-sentence your literary classic, misspelling simple words, and casting doubt across the pages of your talent. I am writer's block I cannot be overcome by inaction, my nemesis is the written word. the completed poem, the edited novel, or the posted blog entry. Thought of the Day: “The amateur believes he must first overcome his fear; then he can do his work. The professional knows that fear can never be overcome. He knows there is no such thing as a fearless warrior or a dread-free artist.” - Steven Pressfield |
The November 23, 2013 prompt for "Blogging Circle of Friends Prompt Forum" ![]() In the United States, Ben Franklin wanted the turkey not the bald eagle for our country's symbol. Which would you choose if you had been able to vote? Or would you have chosen a totally different animal? Why? If you don't live in the US, does your country have a symbol of a animal or something different? Enlighten us. The Turkey is a symbol of abundance, thanksgiving, and fertility.2 The Bald Eagle or American Bald Eagle has many symbolic meanings, which are opportunity, protection, guardianship, masculinity, dominance, control, freedom, community, command, action, authority, skill, focus, determination, vision, power, liberation, inspiration, ruler, and judgment.3 After considering the history of American and what is going on in the country today, I think the American Bald Eagle is probably the best symbol for the United Sates of America. I have several questions about America's symbol. Did the choice of symbols have an affect on America's culture? Would our history have been different if instead of the Bald Eagle we chose the Turkey as a symbol? If the turkey were the symbol of America would we be eating Bald Eagle for Thanksgiving instead of Turkey? Did the choice of symbol have an affect on America's history? If we changed symbols from the Bald Eagle to the Turkey would we change American culture or the country's future? Footnotes |

Today, you are NOT ALLOWED to grammatically edit your entry! The judges will disregard any spelling and grammar mistakes, so feel free to let it all out. This is a free writing exercise. Think about the fruit of your choice and then write anything that comes to your mind. If you start talking about something else, go with it! See where it takes you! Write like this for 10 minutes at least and see where you end up ![]() ![]() The only fruit I can think of on this raining Friday morning is Bananas. Bananas are yellow and most of the time look delicious. They certainly are not like my malaadeptive Daydreams. I begin realize that was the problem after reading an article in Scientific America and then checking the issues out on line. I found two website that seem to have information on this problem. I have know something is wrong, I have known that I have a problem for sometime because I would rather live in a fantasy world where I am in control rather then reality. Up until recently, I thought I was the only human being on earth with this problem, but I should have know better. Maladeptive daydreaming is not officially recognized as yet, but give the medical community time and they will recognize it. I know why or perhaps I think I know why I would rather living in a fantasy world then in the real world. On the bright side, it is an indication of creativity; however, sometime the daydreams interfere with my creativity. I have considered writing the daydreams down and putting them in a book, but up until now I did not want to take the chance that people would think I am weird. All right, I will admit to being weird, but I thought that the daydream thing was weirder then anything else. However, I have found a commonity of people with the same problem. Perhaps I do some more blog entries on this subject and on Bananas. I like bananas. Bananas are one of my favorite fruits. You can eat bananas without teeth. Bananas have never figured in my daydreams yet but given time I think they will., One of the foods that has figured in my daydreams is honey bread and do not ask me how to make it because I have not made it in my daydreams all though I think I do have a recipe book in my daydreams that gives every recipe that my daydreams self knows. It's War Chest Wednesday! The November 20, 2013 prompt for "30-Day Blogging Challenge ON HIATUS" ![]() What was the longest amount of time you spent waiting in line for something? What was it, and was it worth the wait? According to http://wiki.answers.com the average American spends about one hour each day waiting in line, which add up to a lifetime of "2 to 3 years" waiting in line.4 The longest I can remember waiting in line for something was two hours and I was waiting in line at Lutheran Social Service for food. Yes, it was worth the wait, but then I consider waiting for food, coffee, and autographs from actors in science fiction or fantasy films worth the wait. These are things I will stand in line for, but other things are not worth the wait unless I can sit down while I am waiting. Midweek Reflections on Waiting in Line A lifetime spent in waiting lines sitting at the doctor's office, standing at the Department of Motor Vehicles, or ordering a morning cup of Hot Joe; is the wait worth it when you consider that on the day of your death you will also have to wait for the undertaker to transport you to the morgue. It's Wildcard Tuesday! The November 19, 2013 prompt for "30-Day Blogging Challenge ON HIATUS" ![]() Growing up, what career goals did you have or what dreams did you hope to accomplish? Did any of them come to be? How many did you abandon or revise along the way? We never outgrow our dreams, as we mature they become memories of ancient desires haunting our midnight hours. When I was growing up, I wanted what every young girl of the fifties wanted. I wanted a husband, children, a white house with a white picket fence, and I wanted to be a working mother (all right most girls growing up in the 1950s probably did not want this). I wanted to be like my mother, who (in my eyes was super Mom) worked outside the home and kept a clean house as well. Mom worked as a waitress (food server) at Bob's Grill in Blackwell, Oklahoma. My grandparents helped, but at the time it was Mom who I thought did everything. We never abandon our dreams, they conceal themselves in our souls, where they either fester as unhealed wounds or fuel creativity's fires. I am not sure when I gave up on that dream, but I know it was sometime between leaving grade school and graduating from high school. Suddenly that dream, that career, did not seem as important as it once was. Most of my friends, after I left grade school, were from broken homes and had encountered the divorce monster. I begin to think that blinded or one parent families were the norm and not the exception. One thing I am thankful for today, was that the dreams of my childhood never came true because it was an idealistic and unrealistic dream. If that dream had come true, my spiritual growth would have been curtails and my creativity atrophied. The dreams of our long lost youth either push us toward success or become failure's stumbling blocks; we are the ones who decide the type of encouragement our long lost dreams provide. Thought of the Day: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” - Mark Twain |
It's Wildcard Monday! The November 18, 2013 prompt for "30-Day Blogging Challenge ON HIATUS" ![]() Did you ever have your own 'special place' as a child? A secret hiding spot perhaps? The only secret place I can remember having was a doghouse. My grandparents had a black pure bred cocker spaniel (I'm not sure if he was the English or American variety) when I was growing up. His doghouse was built into the garage, which made it warmer in Oklahoma winters. Skeezicks, which is what Grandpa Frank named the dog, was Patties' (she belonged to my mother) only pure bred pup. When I went to my grandparents' house, my secret place was Skeezicks' doghouse, at least until Grandma wonder where I was getting the fleas. After a little investigation, which determined that I only got the fleas on the weekends (when I stayed overnight at my grandparents) she figured out I was hiding in Skeezicks' doghouse. Grandma and Grandpa put a stop to that, all though, from the smile I remember on Grandpa's face when he found out, I suspect he found the incident amusing if not funny. After they put a stop to me hiding in Skeezicks' doghouse I never had a flea problem again. It's Creation Saturday! The November 16, 2013 prompt for "30-Day Blogging Challenge ON HIATUS" ![]() Make up your own stories for the origin of common expressions like "keep your fingers crossed," "shooting fish in a barrel," etc. The term "Watch your P's and Q's" is a shortened version of the term "Watch your Peacocks and Quails". This term was coined by the infamous French Chef Adolphe Bastien Cuisine. Chef Cuisine specialized in creating exotic fowl dishes and the more exotic the bird the better because the more creative he became. One day, Chef Cuisine was challenged to a cook-off by the equally infamous American Chef Caleb Damian Gastronomy. Chef Gastronomy specialized in creating game fowl dishes and the more common the game bird the more creative he became. In this cooking competition each chef was given two birds, which each one had to prepare using the same recipe for each bird. Chef Cuisine was allowed to chose one bird while Chef Gastronomy could chose the other. Chef Cuisine chose a peacock because it was his favorite exotic bird and Chef Gastronomy chose a quail because it was his favorite game bird. Chef Gastronomy took two birds, which he assumed was a quail and a peacock and went to one kitchen, while Chef Cuisine took the remaining birds to another kitchen. They were locked in their respective kitchens for three hours preparing their birds. At the end of three hours, the smoke alarms in each kitchen went off and, after the ceiling fans cleared the smoke, the chefs came carrying their culinary creations. Chef Cuisine placed his birds on the judges table and waited for them to taste his creative effort. All the judges ate, smiled, and ask "Chef Cuisine, how did you get the peacock to have the same sweet and nutty flavor as the quail." He was a bit confused by that remark because, as everyone knows peacocks (no matter how their cooked) have a ducky chicken flavor, but he decided to hold his tongue until the judges tasted Chef Gastronomy's creations. The judges tasted Chef Gastronomy's birds and ask "Please, tell us Gastronomy how you got the quail to have the chicken and duck flavor of a peacock." Gastronomy only shrugged. "I think I can solve the mystery," growled Cuisine. "Unless I'm very much mistaken when Chef Gastronomy pick up the dressed birds he picked up both peacocks, which left me with the common quail." "So," said Gastronomy, "there's nothing we can do about it now." "We can repeat this challenge," Cuisine said with a great big grin, "but this time we need to watch our peacocks and our quails!" |

This photometer was launched on March 7, 2009 to search the MIlky Way galaxy for extrasolar planets. This mission has discovered 1235 possible planets orbiting 997 stars. The discovery of planets around other stars means that human beings will have to take an new look at what it means to be human. Of the five events listed in the article "What happened on the last 10 years (2003-2013) that will go down in History?"11 I believe the event that will go into the history books because it will have an impact on human culture is "The Rise of Social Media". Social media allows individuals all over the planet to learn about the lives and struggles of other individuals on Earth. It shows us that despite the obvious differences we human beings are the grass root component of a single species. Once we learn how similar we are then our differences become inconsequential. The third event I think will make it into the history books of the future is the "United States federal government shutdown of 2013"12 because it showed how selfish and close minded some partisan politicians are and how disruptive partisan politics can be. While the politicians and party leaders may not have learned anything from this disaster, many of their constituents have because they were the ones most effected by the shutdown. This will have a profound effect on the way these people will vote in future elections. Quote of the Day: “The first duty of a man is to think for himself” - José Martí Footnotes |
It's War Cheat Wednesday! The November 13, 2013 prompt for "30-Day Blogging Challenge ON HIATUS" ![]() Lifelong Learning. Does learning ever stop? Is there a point at which humans can no longer learn something new, or is the capacity to learn infinite? What is something you learned today? How about yesterday? Does learning ever stop? No! Learning is innate in human beings. If we did not continue to learn something new about ourselves, our world, or the universe, the human soul and mind would atrophy. They would die because of lack of exercise. Is there a point at which humans can no longer learn something new, or is the capacity to learn infinite? The human capacity to learn is infinite, but it is dependent upon desire and encouragement. We need to learn to exercise our minds and souls; however, if a person does not want to learn something new then learning is impossible. What is something you learned today? Today I learned that the only reason for a sane or insane writer to get up at 4:00 am is to write. I also learned that sanding in line for one or two hour and then sitting in a hard chair for another two or three hours causes my back to hurt and depression to raise its ugly head. It also makes me tired and discourages me from doing anything that I have to do. I have to force myself to accomplish my goals when I am tired, but since I am not sleepy I cannot lay down and go to sleep. How about yesterday? That no matter how long or short the day the sun eventually descends behind Mount Charleston or whatever the name of the beautiful snow capped peak in the west that first comes between Las Vegas and the sun. I have to confess that I am not sure if the western range of the Muddy Mountains, which I think are called the Spring Mountains, have snow or not. I have not bother to look in that direction for several days and, while I did have to drive west on East Charleston this morning, I was too busy watching the traffic around me to look at the mountains. I did not get a chance or take the time to look in that direction yesterday either. Quote of the Day: “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.” - Henry Ford |
